The Cinema For 2/12/10: 2 Mediocre Movies And One Valentine's Day Movie With No Love

Peter Jackson & The Olympics is probably the only movie worth watching in another mediocre week of movies

It's Friday at The Whole Delivery, and that means The Cinema is here.

And it is another weekend of movie that will not be apart of the "Best 10 films of 2010", or even "Best 150 films" of the year. In short, one movie that's semi-enjoyable, one that will bore you possibly for it being a supposed "scary" movie, and one movie that even makes the sappiness of Valentine's Day even look worse.

Not surprisingly, there is no love shown for "Valentine's Day", the movie coming out during, well, Valentine's Day weekend.

Richard Roeper delivers the appropriate review:

I'm going to ask for a long time, who the hell is the star of this movie? And if you say "Valentine's Day silly", then you really suck.

It arguably could be the "Waste of the year". And what makes it even more silly is the fact that after this weekend, who is going to be willing to see this movie? I sure hope the cast director for this cliche' mess didn't allow for too much money to be given to the cast members, because someone needs to be pink sliped if they did.

Onto a movie with much better support than "Valentine's Day". It's getting labeled as a Harry Potter wannabe, but the support or non-support for Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lighting Thief seems to be a slightly positive.

And Dallas Morning News' Tom Maurstad reminds us that it is, first and foremost, a kids movie, though he is gets on Pierce Bonson though:
The film is, for a time, energetic fun, and there are several sequences full of cutting-edge eye candy. Also, to its credit, the film doesn't clutter up its story with adult-friendly jokes and references. This is a kids' movie: Parents can either get into the silly-suspenseful spirit of it or play Rummikub on their iPhones.

You can see the franchise ambitions of Percy in the surprising number of brand-name actors in the cast. But for every payoff – Uma Thurman is great fun as the slithery-seductive Medusa – there are a couple of penalties. Pierce Brosnan is flat-out ridiculous as Chiron the centaur who presides over the training camp for demigods. And Catherine Keener is shamefully wasted as Percy's mortal mother, who does little more than fret and fuss over her superpowered son.

Finally, The Wolfman is the third notable release today, and it really is receiving tepid support at best. Most feel that Benicio Del Toro is miscast in a major way in this film, and that this film just doesn't give enough chills.

The Spill crew on it gave it a middle of the road rating, which is higher than how much feel about it:

And the Detroit News' Adam Graham has says it in proper succinct fashion:
Benicio Del Toro pulls off a nifty trick in "The Wolfman": He makes turning into a werewolf look as dull as doing your taxes.
That review probably will keep you more awake than going to see that movie.

That is The Cinema for this Friday, you have been warned about these movies quality where the Peter Jackson film is the only one even worthy of your currency.

Until next Friday, FIN.
