The Catch Up Thread For 9/27/10: Civil Liberties Hell Week Continues (Updated: ABC Reports Emmanuel To Leave Administration This Week)

Image
Here's what has transpired since this site was last active: The fallout continues from the Obama Administration horrendous decision to dismiss the ACLU/CCR lawsuit to virtually kill whoever they want in this country without facing any repercussions. The Administration is now to the right of even the most extreme Bush loving, executive power craven advocate in David Rivkin with their choice. And now today, wiretapping what you talk about with your friends on AIM and Twitter is their next goal : Federal law enforcement and national security officials are preparing to seek sweeping new regulations for the Internet, arguing that their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is “going dark” as people increasingly communicate online instead of by telephone. Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications — including encrypted e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like Facebook and software that allows ...

The 1st Thread/Yesterday's Leftovers For 9/9/10: The Love Of "Looking Forward" Continues With This Administration!

Image
It certainly sure does : A sharply divided federal appeals court on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit involving the Central Intelligence Agency’s practice of seizing terrorism suspects and transferring them to other countries for imprisonment and interrogation. The ruling handed a major victory to the Obama administration in its effort to advance a sweeping view of executive secrecy power This case was based off the ACLU's successful win from a 3-judge ruling from the 9th Circuit against the Obama DOJ trying to preserve the power of the executive branch of government willingly bringing the law in the "all that is holy National Security", a move candidate Obama vehemently criticized the Bush Administration from doing. This disturbing reversal by that same circuit with a full judge lineup by the 6-5 margin continues our dangerous precedent at giving unlimited power to our President without facing the consequences of illegal and immoral practices. To fittingly sum it up, ...

The Catch Up Thread For 8/30/10: Gallup Poll Shows Historic Numbers.....That Are Bad For Democrats

Image
While the site hasn't been active today, here is what has transpired in the major headlines today. I'm not one to follow polls vigorously, but some of them you just can't ignore. This Gallup poll of registered voters (the one that is much more accurate than the antiquated "likely voter" model) is not very good news for the Democratic Party and voter enthusiasm . The ACLU has a powerful vote on the lawsuit to stop Obama's assassination plan: Where in the hell is Jerry Brown ? This guy is more invisible than Adam Smith's hand. 75% of US cases at Guantanamo Bay on suspected terrorists have been defeated . "What a surprise" when someone gets a fair trial down there....what a surprise. They all want their Nevada man, including Joey Lie, to stay at the head of the House of Lords . Certainly not one of Rick Sanchez's finer moments . Goodness gracious, what was he thinking there? And if they get some power again, guess what they are...

The Other Deliveries Thread For 7/29/10 (Final Edition): The ACLU's Powerful Video That Jan Brewer Needs To Probably See

This is a wonderful and powerful effort from the ACLU indeed : More Deliveries : Did you happen to see this wonderful news letter that MoveOn sent out to all of its viewers in the continue "Defense of Social Security" campaign. Via the always delightful Digby, this letter just is a COMPLETE WIN as it can get. It features 5 key myth busting facts to those who hate just helping their fellow American citizens, including... Myth: Social Security is going broke. Reality: There is no Social Security crisis. By 2023, Social Security will have a $4.3 trillion surplus (yes, trillion with a 'T'). It can pay out all scheduled benefits for the next quarter-century with no changes whatsoever.1 After 2037, it'll still be able to pay out 75% of scheduled benefits--and again, that's without any changes. The program started preparing for the Baby Boomers retirement decades ago.2 Anyone who insists Social Security is broke probably wants to break it themselves. It ...

The Pain of Gitmo Gone......And Still There

Via Marcy Wheeler, take a look at this deep ACLU video about men wrongly brought to Guantanomo Bay and finally released . And here is the key quotes here if you can hear this: Moazzam Begg: My experience of America prior to this was everything that I had seen in the films… the concept of the good guys, the concept of people trying to do the right thing…and, that was shattered. Omar Deghayes: I want the people themselves, humans, the people in America, good people which I met many of, to realize how in their names those ugly people have done to others. But you probably won't be seeing this on any of the cable news networks tonight though.

11/12/08- TWD's Agenda For The Day: Gitmo Going Down

Image
Photo from Brennan Linsley of Associated Press On the verge of fulfilling an important promise . The Obama administration will launch a review of the classified files of the approximately 250 detainees at Guantanamo Bay immediately after taking office, as part of an intensive effort to close the U.S. prison in Cuba, according to people who advised the campaign on detainee issues. There is still work to be done however: Although as a candidate Obama publicly expressed his desire to close the detention facility, his transition team stressed this week that the president-elect has not assembled his national security and legal team and that no decisions have been made "about where and how to try the detainees," Denis McDonough, an Obama foreign policy adviser, said in a statement issued Monday. Nevertheless, the ACLU and many others are happy about this: The Agenda's Pending Schedule will be in the comments section, as usual.
