Sports Thread #3 For 9/30/09: Phillies Officially Return To Postseason, Tigers About To Join Them

Image
Shame they won't repeat, especially with how Brad Lidge is on his usual two year AWOL plan. But good for Charlie Manuel (not Jerry, i wasn't being sarcastic there, but in the next sentence) and a class team in my eyes. Looks like Francisco Rodriguez was just a bit outside with his prediction. Meanwhile, the Twins basically had their season ended by the Tigers tonight. That's what happens when you place all your hopes on Carl Pavano. And though I knew Ricky Nolasco was a solid pitcher, I never ever knew he could be this dominant . LIKE, record book time dominant.

Sports Thread #1 for 8/1/09: The Winner Of The Trade Deadline- The Phillies And The Dodgers

Image
The Tigers should get the co-award for getting the still underrated Jerrod Washburn for two left handed prospects, Luke French and Mauricio Robles. With Washburn, Justin Verlander, and Edwin Jackson (boy, the Rays wish they had him still probably despite all their young pitching), that is really as potent of a 1,2,3 in baseball as there is. But even before the way George Sherrill pitched last night , to me, the Dodgers made the second best move after the Phillies got Cliff Lee (boy, did Lee pitch well or what in his debut last night). They needed a quality lefty in their bullpen, and they did more than get a quality lefty. They got an all star closer in Sherrill, who won't mind being the second man in the pen now, getting holds while Jonathan Broxton closes the door (his blown save against the Cardinals this week, not withstanding.) The Dodgers' rotation, despite the development of Chad Billingsley and Clayton Kershaw, may not be better than the Phillies with Lee now. But it...

Sports Thread #3 for 10/27/08: World Series Game 5 Suspened; First Time in History

Image
(Photo from Mike Segar of Reuters) With the Rays tying the game up at 2-2 all in the 6th, the rains were too much to bear for the rest of the evening. So, because of that, a World Series game has been suspeneded for the first time ever. The game will resume tomorrow at 8pm on Tuesday, and it should set up an interesting dynamic of whether the Phillies can get off to the quick start in the bottom of the sixth when the game resumes tomorrow to finish off the Rays. Or will Tampa Bay continue on its momentum track from the beginning of the sixth inning to do what they have to do in order to survive.

Sports Thread #2 fpr 10/26/08: Blanton Heroics Put Philles One Game Away From Title

Image
Photo from Bill Kostroun of Reuters He pitched well. And he hit REAL WELL. So well did Joe Blanton hit, that he became the first pitcher to homer in a World Series since 1974, when Oakland's Ken Holtzman did it. And fitting, Blanton's former team? The Oakland A's. Still, both me and James believe that the Rays will somehow beat Cole Hamels tomorrow and bring the series back to Tampa Bay (pending a great effort from Scott Kazmir). But even if they do win Game 5, with the way Evan Longeria and Carlos Pena are struggling horribly thus far (no hits for either of them in this series, and B.J Upton's bat has gone cold too), it seems that the Ray of hope for Joe Madden's side will have varnished before reaching the improbable ultimate goal. Tonight was a back breaker to the Rays' chances, and it sets the stage for the Phillies to win their first title since 1980.

Sports Thread #1 for 10/9/08- Philly Vs. LA, is this 80s basketball? NLCS Preview

Image
Are The Dodgers Ready To Make It To The World Series Or Will The Phillies Prove That Consistent Winning Is The Key To A Championship (AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian) By James Eddy Preview Tonight the Philadelphia Phillies and The Los Angeles Dodgers are poised to meet in the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers made it to the NLCS by sweeping the favorite Cubs in 3 games. While the Phillies made it into the CS by beating the Brewers in 4 games taking the series 3 to 1. Now this is where the similarities end between these two teams. Now not only do these teams wear the exact opposite colors; the Phillies wear red, while the Dodgers wear famous Dodger blue, but their path to the playoffs was completely different. The Phillies were a favorite to repeat as National League East division champions, but things were shaky early when slugger Ryan Howard got off to a slow start. Despite the slow start by Howard, the Phillies were carried by second baseman Chase Utley, who seemed to be...

10/2/08- TWD's Agenda for the Day: The Landslide is Forming; Cubs Don't Blow It; Rays, Enjoy It

The polls sometimes don't lie. And thankfully, that seems to be the case right now (although we can never be too sure with these news organizations). The momentum of this election is shifting, and the ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden are on the verge of a landslide of things continue on their current form. And this turn of events, from a neck and neck race ("The polls are getting tight" was the tired cliche phrase you heard for the last three months) to now, isn't even primarily because of them. As we have highlighted all week, conservatives from the sad sight that is the John McCain/Sarah Plain ticket to right wing talking heads blaming Blacks and Latinos for the economy's horrible state that their corrupt policies have put us in, this is turning uglier and uglier as the lead grows wider and wider because of the SOP's obnoxious ways starting to fully be on display. And even both welcoming and alarming at the same time is the fact that the polls and the ne...
