Image
Man, just when the good news was continuing to emerge on this issue , gay marriage will not be able to recommence in California this week . In fact, it will be on hold for at least another 2 months, as the Circuit Judges have ruled on the STAY to be extended until more appealing . The denial of rights or gay people continues, as the system takes place.

The Read International For 8/11/10: The Pain In Pakistan Continues; And So Too In Gansu, China

Image
Photo from AFP 4 million people will need food assistance in the next 3 months. 4 million : The United Nations has launched an appeal for $459m to help the victims of devastating floods that have affected more than 14 million people across Pakistan. The call from the UN's humanitarian agency on Wednesday came as food prices skyrocketed after huge areas of crops were destroyed by the waters. "We have a huge task in front of us to deliver all that is required as soon as possible," John Holmes, the UN humanitarian chief, said at a meeting at UN headquarters. Speaking of ridiculously under reported major events in America, the violent landslide in Gansu province in China has produced a death troll of over 1,000 . But unlike in Pakistan, the government has responded very quickly in the Far East : China's government appears to have responded quickly after landslides and flooding devastated the isolated county of Zhouqu. Rescuers were immediately despatched to th...

The 1st Thread For 8/5/10: Axelrod Says That Obama Still Doesn't Want Gay marriage Despite Claiming Equality

Image
Another one of those great moments in centrist "take no positions" thinking ! President Obama remains opposed to same-sex marriage despite a federal judge's decision to strike down a ban on such marriages, a top White House adviser said Thursday. Senior adviser David Axelrod said the president supports "equality" for gay and lesbian couples, but did not address directly Obama's position on Wednesday's court ruling, which struck down as unconstitutional California's Proposition 8, a 2008 ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage in the state. "The president does oppose same-sex marriage but he supports equality for gay and lesbian couples," Axelrod said on MSNBC. Just as egregious as our "National Inability To Just Say Sorry" is our obvious "National Inability To Do The Obvious Right Thing", lead by our newly 49th birthday President yesterday. "Does oppose same sex marriages but supports equality" is so...

The Gravel #1 For 7/8/10: See, Martha Coakley Is Great At Something

Image
DOMA is ruled unconstitutional in Masschusetts : Today, U.S. District Court Judge Joseph L. Tauro ruled that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional with respect to claims brought by seven married same-sex couples and three widowers from Massachusetts. Under the ruling, the plaintiffs are entitled to the same federal spousal benefits and protections as every other married couple. The ruling stems from GLAD’s lawsuit Gill et al v. Office of Personnel Management et al, filed in March 2009. “Today the Court simply affirmed that our country won’t tolerate second-class marriages,” says Mary Bonauto, GLAD’s Civil Rights Project Director, who argued the case. “I’m pleased that Judge Tauro recognized that married same-sex couples and surviving spouses have been seriously harmed by DOMA and that the plaintiffs deserve the same opportunities to care and provide for each other and for their children that other families enjoy. This ruling will make a real differenc...

The Straight Jacket Award For 3/15/10: A Guy Who Makes John McCain Look Sane

Image
We have a very competitive contest today for this award. The news of Virginia's Attorney General being a birther broke today from the " Not Larry Sabato " blog. But there had to be something even more special to top him from winning the award. And that came from the insane mouth of John McCain's new rival J.D. Hayworth : "Now how dangerous is that? I mean, I don't mean to be absurd about it, but I guess I can make the point of absurdity with an absurd point -- I guess that would mean if you really had affection for your horse, I guess you could marry your horse. It's just the wrong way to go, and the only way to protect the institution of marriage is with that federal marriage amendment that I support." Being a bigot and also a nutcase is what this guy is all about. Who knew that there would be a crazier guy from Arizona than even the likes of McCain and Jon Kyl right now? It is an amazing feat accomplished by only one J.D. Hayworth, a des...

First Same Sex Marriage in Washington D.C.

And the bigots go crazy : And you can read the story of how these two women met . It's a fun read indeed. They met in grad school. Angelisa Young and Sinjoyla Townsend were assigned to debate opposing sides of the same issue in a constitutional law class at the University of the District of Columbia, and both were so nerdily over-prepared -- typical Washingtonians -- that the other member of their group decided the debate was a draw. So they for sure know their Constitutional rights.

New Jersey Follows New York's Lead, Gay Marriage Fails To Pass

Image
Trenton is the new Albany The state Senate rejected a same-sex marriage bill today, a major victory for opponents who contend that the measure would damage religious freedom and is not needed because the state already permits civil unions. The 20-14 vote defeating the measure followed hours of public debate inside the packed Senate chamber, and loud, often-contentious rallies on the Statehouse steps, with hundreds of supporters and opponents of the measure making their voices heard. And with ChristIe coming in office, it probably will be a good while before gay marriage gets a chance to become law in the Garden State. But momentum for the bill grew after Gov. Jon Corzine lost the November election. He has promised to sign the measure before Gov.-elect Chris Christie takes office. Christie has said he opposes the bill. Last month, the legislation cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee after hours of emotional debate and testimony, which set the stage for today’s full Senate showdown. T...

The Break For 12/15/09: DC Council Approves Gay Marriage

Image
Photo from Getty Images After the ugliness of New York , and the current disturbing stonewalling in New Jersey , gay marriage gets a much needed victory from the nation's capital : As expected, the D.C. Council voted 11-2 in favor of same-sex marriage in the District Tuesday afternoon. It was the second of two required votes on the bill. Mayor Adrian Fenty has said he will sign the bill. The historic vote is of particular importance because it puts the same-sex marriage issue in front of Congress. Same-sex marriages would begin in the city as soon as the bill passes a period of Congressional review. Congress is not expected to alter the law. New Jersey, let's get on it with it before Christe comes into office and ends those hopes there.

Gay Marriage Fails In New York, "Strong" Paterson Still Weak

If you live in New York, and especially in New York City, you may have seen all those commercials about David Paterson, being out of nowhere, "strong." Like this Well, despite coming out in support of Gay Marriage in New York State, Paterson was unable to get the notorious Albany Senate in line to vote for it. It failed : The New York State Senate has defeated a bill to legalize gay marriage, voting 38 to 24. The Senate shot down the bill after two and a half hours of debate this afternoon, during which no Republicans spoke. New York's other legislative body, the state assembly, had approved the bill in May by a vote of 89 to 52. Gov. David Paterson (D) supported the measure. He called a special session in November for the Senate to consider the bill and vote on budget measures to reconcile a $3.2 billion deficit. His own party wasn't even unified , as 8 idiots voted against it. Now I don't know if I can even fault Paterson for this, since he did support gay marr...

D.C. Catholic Church Ultimatum: We'll Stop Helping Poor If Gays Get Married

Image
It is truly amazing how low certain people, supposedly upholding Christian values, would shame the faith with their behavior of hatred and pure unfiltered evil. It just seems that it is a constant veritable almost every day that we have an individual or some group sully their religion by doing the exact opposite of what their faith preaches on them. It is even more egregious when they embarrass themselves and their supposed "faith that they are practicing" in a high perch position. Today's fitting example of such a description is the D.C. Catholic Churches. This sure is a great campaign for those who aren't Catholic to become Catholic, isn't it? The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care....

AP's Pat Wellenbach The bigots have won again. Maine is the new California. Safe sex marriage will be repelled in Maine as the majority vote has swung to get rid of it with about 14% of the vote left.

Oy: Prop 8 Upheld In Cali, But Existed Marriages Are Legal

Image
By a 6-1 margin . But at least based off this contention.... whether approximately 18,000 same-sex marriages already in effect would be retroactively annulled by the constitutional change or whether they would be preserved, since the amendment does not state explicitly that it would nullify same-sex marriages performed before the change took effect. The court decided 7-0 to have those marriages before Prop 8 became law stay married.

The Sleep Time and Rise "n" Shine Thread for 11/10-11/08: Keith Olbermann Gets Emotional In His Defense Of Gay Marriage

Fresh off news of his new contract , the "Countdown" host gets so poignant that you can't help but feel it on tonight's (or last night's) special comment from him in the wake of a disastrous week for gay rights in America.
