TWD's Sports Saturday Thread #2 For 9/10/11: 2011 US Open- Women's Semifinal (S.Williams/Wozniacki)

Image
The best two female players in the world currently, here are the tactics for this blockbuster semifinal. And though with no disrespect to Samantha Stosur, this is the de-facto final in spirit (and in placement). The Tactics: For Wozniacki 1) Serve, serve, serve 2) Forehand, forehand, forehand 3) Stay relaxed, this is a friend, and this is your moment For S.Williams 1) Stay relaxed, especially that you are playing a friend, not a true adversary 2) Use the net, use the dropshots, get Wozniacki off the balance 3) Scoreboard pressure, stay ahead. This is the classic match between counterpuncher and puncher. Can the counterpuncher punch the puncher enough. Prediction: I think this will be a classic encounter, and I hope there are warm feelings after the match. I do think that narrowly, Serena will win in an epic 3 set match, just because of her legendary quality to pull her through. But if she is a little off, Wozniacki will win this match.

The Wimbledon 2011 Thread/Sports Thread #1: The Calm During The Storm(s)

Image
Photo from Getty Images and Wtatennis.com The renowned phrase before ominous weather hits, "The Calm Before The Storm", is certainly also used frequently in sport. A massive force that can't be stopped when fully ensconced, the feeling of relaxation, prior to the arrival of extreme conditions, can change rapidly when those conditions come. It could cause a player to lose his or her nerve in a sudden instance, never being able to recover from the acerbic nature of such a powerful, pestilent force. Sometimes though, there are special instances where special people have an ability to show "The Calm During The Storm." Moreover, some people are just "The Calm", no matter when or where. Petra Kvitova, in the year of 2011, has shown she is not only level headed and relaxed in the most stressful situations. Instead, she IS that level headed person, blessed with the "Calm gene." It was evidence today, and proved to be the defining differen...

TWD Saturday 1st Thread/Sports Thread #1 For 6/4/11- 2011 Roland Garros Women's Final Preview

Image
Photo from the AP The almost two month journey that is the European clay court season can be similar to a semester at school. Key examinations will come along your way, but nothing will be of more importance than the final overall test. It's the grade that carries the most weight, and a terrific score on it could be the difference to whether you past the class or not. It could also mean whether you excelled to a higher level than any of your peers. The latter scenario is what both Francesca Schiavone and Na Li are seeking for, as both veteran combatants look to ace the final exam of the clay court season, the French Open final. Coming into Rolland Garros, despite arguably the most wide open field ever, both of the women's finalists were not considered as top favorites to hoist the Lenglen trophy. The early exams on the red dirt showed that Li and Schiavone weren't playing the tennis to make pundits give their confidence in them to win 7 matches in Paris. The defendi...

Sports Saturday #1 For 9/25/10: Another Wild Saturday In The Premier League

Image
Photo from Premierleague.com It's no question who Chelsea's boogeyman team is right now. Manchester City has defeated the league leaders once again, becoming the first team to take any points away from the champions this year thanks to Carlos Tevez fine 59th minute effort to give City a big 1-0 win. City's midfield was just "too powerful" for Chelsea as coach Carlo Ancelotti described, as both Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda had very quiet days in attack today. But the even more eye popping result today in the league was without a doubt West Brom 3-2 shock win at Arsenal. The rest of the results from Saturday highlight clearly how the parody in this league is growing bit by bit. Steven Gerrard had to save Liverpool avoid defeat at home, ending their match against visiting Sunderland 2-2. In the battle of "The Blacks", Blackburn scored a late winner to devastate Blackpool 2-1. Probably the most boring match of the day featured Birmingham a...

The Saturday 1st Thread/All Day Thread For 9/18/10: Lots of Stuff.

Bring in Luda to start the show: Could the controversial and civilian casualty created CIA drone program be halted ? A lawsuit winding its way through the Massachusetts courts could threaten one of the worst-kept secrets around: the CIA's drone program, which targets high-profile terrorists and insurgents in Pakistan. Intelligent Integration Systems Inc. (IISI), a Boston software company, is asking a judge to immediately stop customers, including the CIA, from using proprietary geospatial software that it says another company illegally reverse engineered. The request for a legal injunction filed earlier this month was posted Thursday evening by the Narcosphere.com. That lady was seriously crazy . Seriously, the late 90's in 90 seconds . All of these movies really do make Boston look bad . So damn true, because they really need to stop playing them . And the 10 most stylish means of time travel . Sports Saturday Thread #2 For 9/11/10: The New Modern Day Greek Novel

Image
It hasn't even been two full matchday weekends in La Liga BBVA, and already the Shock of the entire season has already occurred. Newly promoted side Hercules has defeated mighty Barcelona at the Camp Nou of all places by the jaw dropping scoreline of Hercules 2, Barcelona 0. Nelson Valdez scored both of Hercules improbable goals to stun a Barcelona side who looked flat from all the international play most of their roster participated in over the last week. Barcelona have traditionally struggled after their players comeback from playing for their country, but no one saw this result coming. No one, except, maybe the heavens above.

The Saturday Fun Thread For 9/11/10: The Luckiest Idiot This Week

Image
Photo from Kris Kerr and CBS Well, after Terry Jones that is ..... One man didn't cower when he came face-to-face with a shark. He punched it! Kris Kerr and his buddy Ethan Wilson were out near Florida's Smyrna Beach -- the shark bite capital of the world -- over the weekend. Kerr was in the water taking photos of his friend surfing when he found himself facing a shark. After some quick thinking he managed to punch the shark and snap a picture of the encounter. In an exclusive interview on "The Early Show" Kerr said he "definitely was not expecting" to come home with a picture like that on his camera. No one is as fortuitous as that guy. And an awesome, a fitting Onion classic for this day : In what threatens to be an annual ritual, Rob Bachman, born Sept. 11, 1973, braced himself Tuesday for yet another birthday ruined by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "My birthday's gonna suck for the rest of my life," Bachman said on the ev...

Sports Saturday Thread #1 For 9/11/10: Chelsea's 4th Straight Win Gives Them A Commanding Lead Already

Image
Photo from Premierleague.com West Ham showed a lot of spirit and skill , but they concede 3 goals once more to Chelsea, as it is four straight wins for the Blues. And their win was cemented by all of their title rivals except Arsenal dropping points today. Despite injuries, the Gunners overcame a tough Bolton side with a fine 4-1 victory . Their cross town bitter foes Tottenham though did not get the 3 points, as their own injury woes lead to them finishing 1-1 with diligent West Brom . Manchester City continued to look like title pretenders , as Joe Hart's shaky day contributed in Blackburn finishing 1-1 with them. But City's result wasn't as hard to swallow as the collapse their neighbors United had, conceding two goals in two minutes late to Everton to end their match at Goodson Park 3-3 . Despite a horrendous broken ankle injury for Bobby Zamora, Fulham got a late winner from Dembele's 2nd goal to overcome Wolves 2-1. Antolin Alcaraz saved Wigan from anothe...

The Saturday 1st Thread For 9/11/10: The 9 Year Anniversary Will Have Nothing On Next Year's 10th

Image
There's always something about the number 10 be getting the number 9 when it comes to memorizing something. And though everyone has rehash their story of where they were that day nine years ago, there will be something about it next year (Lord willing they make it to next year) that will probably add another element towards the memory. Hopefully, the Cordoba Community Center will be established by then. Oh, and think about his if you haven't : Certainly does hit.

The Saturday 1st Thread For 9/4/10: The Safest City To Drive Is Somewhere In Colorado

First, let's bring in Luda: It's the Saturday 1st Thread, making a needed return to your day. The theme of this week's Saturday 1st Thread is this interesting look at how it's more dangerous to drive in LA and even Philly than it is the Big Apple apparently : Fort Collins, Colorado has again been named America's Safest Driving City, while drivers in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Dallas leave a lot to be desired—if you wish to avoid an accident, that is. So assesses Allstate Insurance Company [NYSE:ALL], in its annual America's Best Drivers Report, which looks at collision frequency in the 200 largest U.S. cities. Those in Fort Collins are in a collision once every 14.5 years (about 31 percent less likely than average), while those in Philadephia will be in a crash once every 6.5 years (nearly 54 percent more likely than average). And of course, your Saturday Fun Thread couldn't be compete with De La Soul: De La Soul - Roller Skating Jam Named S...

The Saturday 1st Thread (Very Late Edition) For 8/21/10: With A Special Edition

Very late edition, but still here: Luda.... With Al Franken continuing the fight against those who threaten democracy online : Franken had choice words for this plan, none of them good. Google and Verizon's scheme empowers the FCC to, "get this—'publish a report'," he dryly commented, while his audience laughed again. "But there's an even bigger issue here. It's that when government will not act, corporations will. And unlike government agencies, which have a legal responsibility to protect American consumers, the only thing corporations care about, the only thing that they have a legal duty to promote, is their bottom line." "We can't let companies write the rules that they're supposed to follow," Franken added, "because if that happens those rules are going to be written only to protect corporations." .....And De La Soul:
