The Labor Day 1st Thread For 9/6/10: Their Day

Image
Demonized almost every single day of the year, today is the day where unions of all shapes and sizes can possibly be praised (or not have to hear another deranged verbal assailment on them.) So for the SEIU, the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, UAW, and all the other inions in this country who have dealt with the hard times and battles of fighting for workers rights, happy Labor Day indeed to them. Because their enemies really do hate that a holiday is given towards these unions.

Dylan Ratigan Lets Michelle Bernard Advocate "Abolishing Teacher's Unions"

Image
I'm sort of in the middle to leaning "he does more to not annoy me" than he does "to annoy me" on Dylan Ratigan. Though he was nowhere to be found yelling about the perils of what the out of control trading on Wall Street when he was on CNBC the last few years, Ratigan has been nothing but a relentless critic on the "rich and powerful" almost every single day in his tenure as a highlighted MSNBC host. Some days has led to just awesome rants on the likes of Geithner, Rubin, or even tea bagging nutcases like Mark Williams and "The only nan who could hate Shirley Sherrod in this world," Mr. Breitbart. But Ratigan still pays this silly homage and respect to the Right and some conservatives daily, thinking that their perspective, if it comes from the honest heart, is just as commendable as the progressive wing in the Democratic Party. Giving attention to those at the Washington Examiner and feeling like people of the Ron Paul nature truly ...

This Is Nice

The esteemed Service Employees International Union is set to officially name a new President. And that President is poised to be the first women President in the union's history, as well as the first openly gay leader of the SEIU. With the retirement of current President Andy Stern, the big union groups from across the country have chosen Mary Kay Henry over Stern's preferrer choice Anna Burger as the next person to lead the SEIU (and guarantee her position on the chalk board next week of the Goldboy nutty one). As Ben Smith notes in one of the rare Politico pieces I will ever link in a post coming from me, the SEIU wanted a change from the pace they were clearly on in regards to their focus : Stern turned SEIU into a political juggernaut, with millions of members, an activist tradition, and a willingness to spend more than $30 million electing President Obama the ultimate mark of its emergence as arguably the most important independent political force in America. Stern wa...

AFL-CIO Drops Lincoln, Commits $3 Mill To Halter

Image
This broke late tonight , as the momentum from the base for Bill Halter grows. Add Richard Trumka and crew to those glad that he wants to make Lobbyist Lincoln go to real full time job. A labor source confirmed to TPMDC tonight that the AFL-CIO voted to back new Senate candidate Lt. Gov Bill Halter over Sen. Blanche Lincoln in the May 18 Democratic primary in Arkansas. Three unions within the umbrella group have committed to a $3 million independent expenditure on Halter's behalf. All day long, the Rational Online Community has poured in the obvious support since the great news well back at the crack of dawn. And in the night time stage of this 1st day of March, the big unions are ready to going in on the fight against the establishment, which includes the White House. They, like everyone else, are sick of Lincoln: The backing of the AFL-CIO is an important one for any Democrat. For Halter, it signals that the unions are prepared to put their money where their mouth has be...

The Sleep Time and Rise "n" Shine Thread for 10/1-2/08- One of the Realest Videos I Have Ever Seen

Special thanks to paltapus at the Kos for this wonderful video. This is a must see, and her's the transcript below. You see brothers and sisters, there's not a single good reason for any worker -- especially any union member -- to vote against Barack Obama. There's only one really bad reason to vote against him: because he's not white. And I want to talk about that because I saw that for myself during the Pennsylvania primary. I went back home to vote in Nemacolin and I ran into a woman I'd known for years. She was active in Democratic politics when I was still in grade school. We got to talking and I asked if she'd made up her mind who she was supporting and she said: 'Oh absolutely, I'm voting for Hillary, there's no way I'd ever vote for Obama.' Well, why's that? 'Because he's a Muslim.' I told her, 'That's not true -- he's as much a Christian as you and me, so what if he's muslim...
