In a boost to embattled Dem Senator Blanche Lincoln — and a bit of a blow to primary challenger Bill Halter — fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton is throwing his support to the incumbent Senator, his spokesman confirms to me. Halter’s entry into the race had kicked off a round of speculation about who Clinton would endorse, given that he hails from the state and remains very popular with Dem primary voters. If Clinton had remained neutral it would have been a big boost to Halter. Begich, the Democratic mayor of Anchorage, widened his lead to 3,724 votes in Tuesday's count of absentee and questioned ballots. The lead is insurmountable, as the only votes left to count are approximately 2,500 ballots from overseas. The Senator-elect comments after hearing the official news of victory: Begich claimed victory, saying, "I am humbled and honored to serve Alaska in the U.S. Senate." Talk about an ironic, peculiar birthday present for the 85 year old curmudgeon Stevens. He was saved the embarrassment of getting rejected by his Republican colleagues and thrown out for good thanks to Begich's victory. If this was Barack Obama's last speech as a regular citizen in the United States of America today, then he certainly closed it out in the spectacular and inspiring fashion that has become a trademark custom of his legendary monologues. Make no mistake, this speech today was just as great as the ones in Denver in late August, Lansing in July, St.Paul in June, Philadelphia in March, Iowa in January, Boston four years ago, and all in between. It highlighted the problems of America, but most importantly, focused on how those problems in the past have not stopped the people of this great nation (and may I even say citizens of this world) from getting back up after being so down.
