The House of Lords For 11/21/13: Consequences and Repercussions

Thanks to all of you who encouraged me to consider filibuster reform. It had to be done. — Senator Harry Reid (@SenatorReid) November 21, 2013 It's something that should have happened a long time ago , and that was even before the Republican Party became the deranged and nutcase element that it has been for years. Simply put, it shows again how you need to elect the right people with the correct ideology into The House of Lords (The Senate) in order to have the right, correct bills that work for the good of the nation as a collective whole. When Harry Reid was finally fed up over the secret and not so secret blockings of judges continuing by the nutcase party, both him and Obama just had to just do what was required. Senate Republicans were given a final warning in July , but they just wouldn't listen unsurprisingly. And as Sir Moulitsas states as eloquently and directly as he usually does , Republicans knew full well that Reid & company had the full will to...

Torpedo Those Foreclosures Illegal By Sane Veto!

Image
Good : Today, the White House announced that President Obama will not sign H.R. 3808, the Interstate Recognition of Notarizations Act of 2010, and will return the bill to the House of Representatives. The Interstate Recognition of Notarizations Act of 2010 was designed to remove impediments to interstate commerce. While we share this goal, we believe it is necessary to have further deliberations about the intended and unintended impact of this bill on consumer protections, including those for mortgages, before this bill can be finalized. Notarizations are important for a large range of documents, including financial documents. As the President has made clear, consumer financial protections are incredibly important, and he has made this one of his top priorities, including signing into law the strongest consumer protections in history in the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. That is why we need to think through the intended and unintended consequences of this bill o...

The House Of Lords For 9/23/10: Close On The Disclose Act Again (Update: The House Passes The Small Business Bill)

Image
For a second time this year, the DISCLOSE Act has failed to pass in the House of Lords. 59-39 was the final total, as a disclipine party line vote was the end result. Even Ben Nelson decided to not buck his party for another rare moment, deciding to stay with the Democrats on this bill. Nevertheless, as always the case, no Republicans wanted to vote in favor of the bill, adhering to their corporate overloads at the sacrifice of the American people once more. Not a surprise, but just another routine day in the most dysfunctional and anti-democratic chamber known to modern day human being. Update : In more positive news, the House got out the Small Business bill , as that is now passed onto to President Obama for signature.

The House of Lords For 9/21/10: A Defense Bill Is About To Go Down Thanks To Bigots

Image
The House of Lords is about to provide a truly rare time of not even providing cloture to a Defense Authorization Act thanks to gay-hating bigot Republican Senators and even the obstinate Jim Webb, also contributing to his abomination of gays. But besides "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" under full jeopardy here, also under jeopardy is the rational DREAM Act, which would give children brought to this country at an early age and have lived here where they are fully "Amercianized" citizenship. Republicans of course have tied that to granting amnesty, leading to more insensitive comments from them. The vote tally to move on the defense Act to come folks, stay tuned. The Vote: Webb votes to move it, but the Republicans will stand in opposite here. Out of nowhere, Blanche Lincoln says "No", and Harry Reid has to say "No" now in order for the vote to come back down the line.

Their "Moderates" Even Hate "Social Justice"

Image
Certified world class liar Judd Gregg's biggest problem with Elizabeth Warren's potential new role : "My concern is that she would use the agency for the purpose of promoting social justice," Gregg said on ABC's "Top Line" webcast. The agency, Gregg said, should promote improving access to credit, as well as other financial services. This retiring arrogant clown really exemplifies how those supposedly "moderate" people in the Sad Obnoxious Party (and in all of Washington actually) really aren't moderate at all. They only have a thought for "Me, Myself, and I", and Gregg exemplifies that very mindset to the highest (or lowest, depending on how you see it) level. In fact, to further dive into how Gregg's comment on Warren really does reverberate, let's fully remember the clout Gregg has before he thankfully leaves from office in a few months' time. Gregg is the ranking member of The House of Lords' (The Sen...

The 1st Thread For 9/14/10: "Yes Or No" Stop The Answer For Warren

Image
Still no definitive answer yet on her being in there yet : I think it’s important to recognize that “the White House” is not a monolith. There are sometimes counteracting forces there, and one aide may not know what the other aide is pushing. Increasingly the internecine fights get aired out in public, though typically anonymously. That’s the best way to read this denial of the plan I mentioned yesterday, to make Elizabeth Warren the interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency. White House officials denied reports Monday that the Obama administration is considering naming Elizabeth Warren the interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency to avoid a tough nomination fight on the Senate floor. And Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), a key negotiator on the reform bill that created the position, told reporters Monday that he “absolutely” believed that any person President Barack Obama names to the position – Warren or not – should g...

The House of Lords For 8/4/10: Education Jobs & State Medicaid Payments Bill Passes Cloture

Image
61-38, it is moved. Eurekia! The full roll call to come, as Judd Gregg is being a you know what hole as we speak. Update : Snowe and Collins join in on the fun , probably facing the pressure from the AFSCME in Maine. The diaper man Vitter was the only one missing in action. Update 2 : And with the House needed to make this official, her comes Nancy to the rescue:

The House Of Lords For 7/27/10: The Vote To Have Cloture On The DISCLOSE Act Fails

Image
The Republicans sure don't like transparency don't they? The members of the nutcase party all stayed in line and voted against even cloture, cloture folks, for the already watered down but still nevertheless important DISCLOSE ACT. 57-41 was the final vote, with Harry Reid having to vote against it in order to have it be brought back to the floor later in the week. At least their is no Democrats to blame this time, outside of Mr. LIE-Berman being absent.

The 2nd Thread/Yesterday's Leftovers For 7/27/10: Put It All Right Back In The House Of Lords

Image
The House of Lords exhibited how they don't care about the downtrodden and the middle class once again last Thursday, as they stripped needed Supplemental Appropriations out of that lovely war funding bill set to past soon with no challenge. Those wonderful appropriations that the House of Lords deemed not worthy of their support include essential aid for teachers and that USDA settlement with black farmers that has been long overdue . Back in February, the Obama Administration settled the $1.5 billion lawsuit with black farmers . But now, thanks to all the members of the nutcase party, as seven uncaring Democrats practiced their inner Republican once again in full daylight , those integral pieces to an already terrible bill are gone. Bayh (typical), Begich (man, has he casted some terrible votes in his short time), Bennett (a growing fraud), Carper (but he will love his banking friends though), Landrieu (same old same old), McCaskill (a fake), Pryor, Warner (what a disap...

The House of Lords For 7/20/10: 4th Time A Charm For Unemployment Benefits, P

Image
From all the pre-game talk, it appears it will be. But even if it passes, no one should forget how Republicans and Ben Nelson didn't give a damn about the downtrodden. Let it be reminded again, again, and again. The final roll call vote is live, and we shall see how many Republicans continue to hate the unemployed so much in a second. Brown and Gregg voted against unemployment benefits, and so has Ben Nelson. What a class act Cornhusker Kickback is. Update : It passes 60-40......embarrassing that it had to take a 4th time for something so routine and simple to pass. Snowe and Collins joined the Democrats, including Goodwin on his first vote, while virtual Republican Nelson joined his true nutcase party.

Obama: "We Had The Same Senators Support Tax Cuts But Not Support Unemployment Benefits"

Image
Photo from AFP's Saul Loeb Basically that was the main highlight of the quick address from President Obama on unemployment benefits, which finally looks to be passed in The House of Lords tomorrow. We all know the story of the insane nutcase elephant party, and how they hate the poor every chance they get. Maybe more important though is how the White House and Harry Reid just haven't all been willing to just change it the rules in the House of Lords to a majority vote and do away with the draconian filibuster. Of course, that would be seen as "too ambitious" despite a historic record set by Republicans on filibustering. So let's not even go there then on that obvious change that needed to be made a while ago.

The Domestic For 6/24/10: The Difference Bewteen A Sane Home And An Asylum

Image
The House just a few hours ago passed the Disclose Act, the long awaited act to virtually try and almost cover up the unbelievable, intentional mess of the John Roberts lobbyist controlled Supreme Court and their infamous Citizens United vs FEC decision. Now of course with the House, it can never be as 100% liberal despite a large majority in the House, because of some Democrats just wanting to be Republicans any chance they get, as well as progressives not fighting tooth and nail for carve outs to the NRA (the nice little exemptions for them in this bill) like what seems to always happen. Pelosi was happy about it nevertheless of course. Now all of these nice feelings about this bill passing is all eviscerated however, because of the wonderful place it will leave "The House" to travel to. You know what place that is? Oh, you do? The House of Lords, with it's 100 Lord wannabes given archaic powers to hold the nation at hostage. That latest example of their bla...

Mr. Truck Cosmo Guy Thinks The EPA Is A Non-Government Agency

Image
I guess he didn't talk this one over with his truck : Though he’s considered a potential swing vote on future clean energy legislation and was facing pressure to help block the action, Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) voted in favor of Murkowski’s resolution. In a Cape Cod Times op-ed yesterday, Brown defended his position by claiming that “this action would give an unelected and unaccountable government agency the power to impose restrictive and damaging carbon dioxide regulations that will drive up energy prices and hurt job-creating small businesses in our country.” Brown took a different position, however, on a local right-wing radio show, claiming that “a non-governmental agency” would be empowered: CARR: They’ve been, they’ve been advertising, as you probably know, all over the radio and TV, you know, demanding, the liberals, the moonbats, that you vote for this thing. How do you explain your vote against it? BROWN: Well, I’m looking out for jobs and jobs in Massachusetts and...

The House Of Lords For 6/10/10: They Like To Be Republicans Sometimes It Seems

Image
Photo from AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite So pathetic, even if it failed : The Murkowski resolution of disapproval of the EPA's regulation of greenhouses gasses failed today, 47-53. Blanche Lincoln voted for Murkowski's resolution, the resolution President Obama had vowed to veto, should it pass. Lincoln was joined, surprise, by Evan Bayh, Mark Pryor, Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, and Jay Rockefeller. So did those great Republican moderates, Snowe, Collins, and Scott Brown. And so it goes. Rockefeller too, showing how much of a fraud he is. Just another day in The House of Lords.

The Break #2 For 5/11/10: The One Time Audit Bill Is Passed, But Grayson-Paul Version Falls

Image
Despite it being just one audit, and it going back to only 2007 (good centrist protection policy), the audit of the Fed has been pass through the House of Lord, I mean, the Senate, by a rousing 96-0 vote. Comprehensive across the board bi-partisanship that will make the White House and David Broder smile, as Bernie Sanders tampered down amendment goes through. But the bi-partisanship didn't extend to an even stronger version of Grayson-Paul's version through the David "Diaper Man" Vitter's window dressing amendment, trying to steal the shine of Grayson and Paul. So him not getting credit for that is the only saving grace of not passing something that should have been passed. And get this key tidbit from the invaluable David Dayen on how scared Blanche Lincoln is right now of Bill Halter : …The amendment passes 96-0. Having that many Senate votes for this level of transparency from the Fed will be a powerful symbol that something’s rotten at the central ba...

SEIU Hits Back At Obama's Weird Proclamation Of Lincoln's "Populist" Ways

Image
Two days ago, Sam Stein broke the story of how President Obama even went further than President Clinton in his support for Blanche "Me Me Me, All About Me" Lincoln by cutting that radio ad for her . That ad as you well by know now tried to paint Lincoln of all Senators as a populist figure looking out for the little people in her state over the corporate insiders she gladly banters and appreciates in the Beltway. When I saw that ad, I thought it was literally a joke almost as bad as Obama's drone joke on Saturday (or the pathetic display Jay Leno put on Saturday at the Correspondents Dinner). That ad certainly was begging for a response from somewhere to combat basic exaggerations from the President on Lincoln. And that response has come from the SEIU thankfully. From the industrial Greg Sargent : The SEIU is going up with an ad on black radio in Arkansas that directly contradicts President Obama's claims about Blanche Lincoln on health care and Wall Street r...
