The 1st Thread/The Campaign is Over Thread #1 For 10/16/12: The Debate Format is Dead

Image
Candy Crowley will moderate the debate tonight. Expect the same centrist media performance instead of the best journalism.  Basically, it doesn't matter if it's a long term veteran or a new centrist media darling, America's debate moderation format in national, state, and local elections is antiquated and dead. When moderators don't ever think about fact checking candidates or do their research to correct candidates' lies, half-truths, or just deceiving misinformation in general, what purpose is a debate to American lives (and the global community) in the 21st century other than a glorified excuse for news networks to still feel their overrated, overpriced pundits are worth listening to? When candidates are blatantly proud of their mendacity and dishonesty , with only follow up questions as their punishment for those shameful actions by supposedly the best journalists in America, then the debate format's current form is nothing but a continued sham ma...

The Early Morning Deliveries For 8/13/10 (1st Edition): Oh That Was Fun

Andreson Cooper kind of does deserve getting shouted out by a psychopath last night . Then again, he'll still think that The Left does this too I guess: Oh dear, Jonathan Alter's Villager obnoxiousness is flaring up again . Glenzilla never backs down of course . And enjoy this sparefet between David Sirota and Harold Ford junior, particularly the last few minutes . Harold still hasn't learned it appears.

Now This is Discourse.

It seems that Democracy Now is the only place where you can find serious, actual grown up, 1 on 1 banter that isn't about garnering ratings or entertainment points, but to informed their viewer on the most important news events and situations of our time. Today, DN featured the settled discussion (for now) in a week long respectful back and forth debate between Glenn Greenwald and Lawrence Lessig on Elena Kagan's nomination. Simply put, for those who didn't have a chance to see or hear about this discussion that took place on the invaluable Amy Goodwin's show, it was the "settling of the score" for these two renowned legal figures on the left after their back to back appearances on Rachel Maddow's Monday show. Even though both certainly left the show with the same sentiment on Kagan as they held before, but exhibited a level of decorum, as well as intelligent colloquy, severely missing in our usually terrible television discourse. Here's the ent...

The Gravel For 4/14/10: They Would Oppose A Clone Of Scalia Or Alito If They Had To

Image
No matter how much she is liked by conservatives, Elena Kagan will still be painted by them as far to the left. In the minds of conservatives, everyone is simply a far-leftist . Every.........ONE : I hasten to repeat that no matter how sensible Kagan may be on the national-security and executive-power issues that aggravate the Left, it doesn’t follow that conservatives should welcome her nomination. For on a host of other issues—abortion, same-sex marriage, race and gender quotas, and an aggressively secularist reading of the Establishment Clause, to name just a few—there’s no reason to believe that Kagan would be anything other than a doctrinaire liberal judicial activist. Even when they are a weak minority and their ideas are both irrelevant and disastrous, conservatives will always want everything THEY want at every single time. It just only makes common simple sense that President Obama chooses someone who truly has a liberal background. A true liberal background not locate...

Yesterday's Leftovers #2 For 3/19/10: I Wouldn't

Image
Seriously, who would take progressives threats to not vote for any future bill seriously on anything after this entire process : But what's not reasonable is to pretend that Emanuel wasn't right in his core assumption about progressive behavior. Nobody likes to acknowledge their own powerlessness, but no good can come from shutting one's eyes and pretending it's not true. It's a genuine problem that the threats and demands of progressives (for lack of a better term) aren't taken seriously at all, and will be taken even less seriously now. Facing that problem is a prerequisite to finding a way to solve it. So on whether it's immigration reform, or a job bill, or a possible second stimulus, or EFCA or anything else, I just wouldn't take any threat serious from the progressive caucus. And it doesn't facilitate the situation for any real, future stand when they are juxtaposed around the word irrational by liberal bloggers. So maybe we should jus...

The Gravel For 11/13/09: Still Not All The Way Good

Image
Photo from OLIVIER DOULIERY/ OLIVIER DOULIERY/ABACA PRESS/MCT Glenn Greenwald, as usual, tells the whole truth about the Justice Departments decision to send Guantanomo Bay detainees to court in New York. Though it is commendable that our legal system under the Obama Administration is making the decision to let trials happen (something that certainly wouldn't have happen under the previous one), this crucial fact is getting overlooked by most : The problem is that this decision does not stand alone. Instead, it is accompanied by this: Holder will also announce that a major suspect in the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, will face justice before a military commission, as will a handful of other detainees to be identified at the same announcement, the official said. It was not immediately clear where commission-bound detainees like al-Nashiri might be sent, but a military brig in South Carolina has been high on the list of considered sites. So what we have here ...

The Daily Open Thread For 8/24/09: Jeremy Scahill Smackdown Of Chuck Todd

On Bill Maher on Friday, classic from this terrific journalist on a not so, status quo loving one. And get this from Glenn Greenwald about what Todd said to Scahill Right as we walked off stage, he said to me "that was a cheap shot." I said "what are you talking about?" and he said "you know it." I then said that I monitor msm coverage very closely and asked him what was not true that I said on the show. He then replied: "that's not the point. You sullied my reputation on TV." Like your reputation matters Todd? What a clown he is. More to come later....including today's many explosive headlines. There's plenty of them to come.
