Sports Special Thread #5 For 6/21/10: Los Angeles Lakers Parade 2010 Rap

Image
Not much, other than this : In addition to the sales of Lakers paraphernalia and water, some surprising entrepreneurs took to the parade route to sell their wares. Among them was a mobile truck, Weed World Candies.com, selling marijuana lollipops in hues of orange and blue. (The truck itself is green with a photo mural of young women in bikinis sorting marijuana leaves.) Customers approaching his truck were asked if they had a prescription card allowing them to purchase marijuana and then were handed a free lollipop. “It’s been working out very well,” he said of business before driving away as police became visible in the distance. Too funny.

The 2010 NBA Finals, Game 7 Thread (Sports Thread #5) For 7/17/10

Image
Will it be the Boston Celtics league record 18th franchise title, or will the Lakers make the rivalry between these two teams in the final be a record of 3-9 instead of 2-10? The keys right now to the ultimate game of the National Basketball association season. It's Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The Keys Work For Perk By Powing Pau It's not just his 7 point, 7 rebound average that the Celtics will miss tonight from their injured center Kendrick Perkins . Gone from Doc Rivers' side is the stuff you don't see on the stat sheet. Weak side defending, clogging the lane, altering shots, and offering that key enforcer downlow that gave the Celtics the slight advantage in the paint, where the Lakers couldn't dominate them like they did their Western conference brethren through these playoffs. Rahseed Wallace and Glen Davis must facilitate Kevin Garnett on Pau Gasol tonight, as well as containing the order ailing center in this series, Andrew Bynum, from getting off down...

Thursday night.......will Perkins be back, and will Artest playing like he did tonight? Let the two day hype begin:

Sports Thread #2 For 6/10/10: 2010 NBA Finals Game 4, Lakers vs Celtics

Image
From NBA.com After the 1st quarter update: Paul Pierce has come to play tonight, and the referees are still.........the referees. 19-16 Celtics. And here's the Live Feed for now: Video chat rooms at Ustream 2nd half review : Despite the Celtics missing a lot of easy buckets and Kobe getting hot at the end, and Lamar Odom showing up and caring for another game, the Celtics are fortunate the find themselves only down by 3. Oh, and the officials are still having a forgettable series.

Sports Thread #3 For 6/8/10: Fishing For A 5th Ring, Derek Leads Lakers To Big Game 3 Win

And we still are looking for Ray Allen's shot ......what a contrast from game one:

Sports Sunday Thread #5 For 6/6/10: Ray Trey Day- Celtics Even The Series At 1 All

Image
Photo from NBA.com He was able to stay on the court tonight and set a Finals record for 3-pointers instead of setting up fouls on his score card. But it was also Rajon Rondo, his back courtmate, who made the difference. Playing faster, controlled the tempo, the Celtic #9 was certainly proficient tonight. And he even hit a three pointer! This was the real Celtics tonight, and they exhibited the form that made people believe that they will win this series. The full review is here .

Yesterday's Leftovers For 5/26/10 & Sports Thread #2 For 5/25/10: Well, We Have A Series

And the series won't be ending in five games.

Sports Sunday Thread #3 For 5/23/10: Stoudamire Plays Like A Stud, Suns Save Their Season

Image
Photo from NBA.com/Getty Images Talk about a redemption game for Amare Stoudamire, as he just did it big tonight. But credit to Alvin Gentry, who used the zone effectively in the game. But obviously, you can only be effective in the zone if your opponent misses. Most importantly, with Stoudamire and Robin Lopez, they controlled the paint. But benches were dreadful in this game, so it makes Game 4 even more intriguing.

Sports Thread #2 For 5/19/10: Suns Make it Closer, But Lakers Protect Home Court Again

Suns defense has obviously got to be better if they want to have a chance in this series. But obviously, they played much better on offense, even though both Nash and Stoudamire have to play at their All-league levels.

Sports Thread #1 For 5/18/10: The Distraction That Could hurt The Lakers?

Image
I was wondering why she wore this shirt last night, thinking she just wanted to draw attention to herself . Photo from SportsbyBrooks.com Well, turns out, she was apart of the "Boycott Phil Jackson for supporting Jan Brewer's free racial profiling SB 1070 protest before Game 1 yesterday. Fun Fun : Vanessa Bryant, who is part Hispanic, wore the shirt on the game night that approximately 40 demonstrators rallied against Lakers coach Phil Jackson for refusing to criticize Arizona’s new immigration law. In comments made two weeks ago about state Senate Bill 1070, Jackson said, “Am I crazy, or am I the only one that heard (the legislature) say ‘we just took the United States immigration law and adapted it to our state.’ “ Now this is the thing. This shouldn't be a distraction for any team, let alone a team as laid back and confident right now as the Golden jerseys. However, with the political climate still the same in Arizona and the tensions that will come But jus...

Sports Thread #2 For 5/17/10: Kobe & Lamar Show

They sent a message to the Suns obviously. But don't count the Suns out yet because of this game .

Sports Sunday #2 For 5/2/10- Lakers Survive A Jazz Comeback To Take Game 1

Image
Photo from Getty Images They were so bored with Utah, they almost blew game one. Nevertheless, they got the W, and the full review is going to be here . Oh, and I guess David Stern probably least wanted the Bucks-Hawks to go to a Game 7 of all the first round series. But hey, win some, lose some. (The Post game press conferences you can watch here if you heart feels like it.)

Sports Thread For 4/2/10: Kobe Stays A Laker Til 2014

Image
It was funny how everyone was thinking that he could leave, and leave for my Knicks. Too funny : Kobe Bryant has signed a three-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced Friday. The deal will keep Bryant a Laker through the 2013-14 season. "We are extremely pleased that we were able to reach an agreement and come to terms on the extension at this time," said Lakers general manger Mitch Kupchak. "Kobe has been a cornerstone of the Lakers for well over a decade, helping to lead us to four NBA championships and in the process developing into one of the greatest players in basketball history."

Simple review: I thought the winner of this Game would win the series. Figuring how this thing ended in addition to that prediction, this one really really really is going to be a long two days for the Dodgers heading into Game 5 on Wednesday. Brutal for them, as their closer gets bitten against them tonight just like he did last year .

Sports Thread #3 for 7/30/09: Odom To Stay With The Lakers

Image
Photo from Getty Images Thankfully, he valued another title over Miami taxes Odom will sign a four-year contract, with the fourth year at the team option, the source said. One source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com the four-year deal is worth $33 million if the Lakers exercise the final year of the contract. Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak declined comment and Odom’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not immediately return a voice mail.

Sports Thread #2 for 6/15/09: When Bill Simmons Talks NBA, he's Great. And He Speaks The Truth Here

Image
Bill Simmons is something the typical American sports writer who can be a condescending fool on sports like soccer and tennis. But when he talks about basketball, he is definitely relevant and knows what he is saying most of the times. His criticism of the fawning over Kobe being a different person is definitely astute indeed. Did you hear about Gasol's sacrifice during the playoffs? Not really. Just like you didn't hear about Odom's willingness to give up minutes and touches during a contract year (a rarity in the NBA these days), or Ariza's red-hot shooting and the irony of Orlando giving him away last season. We always heard about Kobe sacrificing, but really, the key to the 2009 title was that he finally found three talented sidekicks willing to sacrifice for him. Big difference. Read the whole thing, it is actually good stuff.
