Music Thread #1 For 1/6/10: Despite A Furious Late Push From Susan Boyle, Taylor Swift Ends With Top Selling CD of 2009

Image
Both of them went over the 3 million mark, the only artists for US best sales to do that since 2006 . Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" reigns for a sixth straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 137,000 (down 73%) according to Nielsen SoundScan, bringing her cumulative sales total up to 3,104,000. However, while that is a huge sales sum -- especially considering it was totaled in just six weeks time -- it's not enough to overtake Taylor Swift's "Fearless" as 2009's top selling album. The latter is at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 this week, selling another 60,000 -- bringing its 2009 total to 3,217,000. Of course, Boyle can rest easy in knowing that her "Dream" is but one of just two albums to sell at least 3 million copies in the U.S. last year -- something that hasn't happened since 2006, when three albums did it. Boyle's "Dream" is also 2009's top selling album released last year (Swift's "Fea...

Music Thread #1 For 1/4/10: The Runthrough

First music thread of the new year, and as always, it is a runthrough on Monday. This dropped on New Year's Day. Another black and white video from him. ANOTHER.................... ONE MTV, still sometimes acting as a music source, gives their album previews to look for in 2010 . They are doing better than their album at last for New Year's . Oh dear Bow Wow . And did I mention how Susan Boyle was the story of music last year ?

Music Thread #1 For 12/17/09: For A Third Straight Week, Susan Boyle Blows Everyone Away

Image
Photo form Billboard The remarkable story continues : Susan Boyle remains atop the Billboard 200 chart for a third week with "I Dreamed a Dream," selling 582,000 copies (up 10%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. So far, "I Dreamed a Dream" has sold 1.8 million and is racing after Taylor Swift's "Fearless," currently the top selling album of 2009 with 2.7 million. Along with "Fearless," Boyle's "Dream" is just the second album to spend three weeks at No. 1 this year. Swift's album spent seven weeks at No. 1 in the 2009 calendar year, in addition to three weeks atop the chart in late 2008. And get this latest set of history from Boyle: "I Dreamed a Dream" is also just the eighth album to sell at least 500,000 copies in each of its first three weeks of release, since SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. And, it's the only album by a woman to do so. The last set to charge through 500,000 in each of its first thr...

Music Thread #1 For 12/15/09: Alicia Keys And Robin Thicke Headlines This Week's Release

Image
Alicia Keys and Robin Thicke, looking for a bounce back after subpar sales on his last album, are the big notable releases today. It will be interesting to see how big Alicia Keys' totals will be. She has been everywhere this fall, and with this CD being released in the holiday season, it is an album that I would be surprised if it doesn't bring her at least 300,000 in week one. And remember, Keys sold a staggering 742,000 albums the first week for "As I Am", as her first week sales have gone up and up since her great "Songs In A Minor" debut in 2001. If she were to duplicate or better that total, she would surpass Susan Boyle's remarkable debut numbers as top debut of the week on the charts. "The Element Of Freedom" two singles out ("Doesn't Mean Anything" and "Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart") have been overshadowed by "Empire State Of Mind" big time success. But even if those singles aren't better to m...

Music Thread #1 For 12/9/09: Susan Boyle Is Platinum In Two Weeks

Image
Last week, after the news of Susan Boyle's wonderful first week sales, I said this : Boyle is on the road to going platinum in three weeks here, and it wouldn't be foolhardy to think she could push 300K in her second week (though I don't think it will happen). I really thought at day's end this week, Boyle would be within a whisker of going platinum. I was wrong. By a long, LONG shot. She has sold over a million in two weeks : usan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" album continues its hold of the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 527,000 copies (down just 25%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. After two weeks of release, "I Dreamed a Dream" is now the 10th biggest-selling album of the year with 1.23 million sold. Just wow. Doyle, as I talked about last week, is a testament once again that, if marketed right and/or capable of making quality music that can't be denied, music artists of any shape or size can sell CD's just like the 90...

Music Thread #1 For 12/2/09: Susan Boyle Wows With Massive First Week Sales

Image
I always love an underrated story...and man, that is certainly the case with one Susan Boyle. I (and many others I might add) didn't expect this. But I am pleasantly surprised YouTube sensation and former "Britain's Got Talent" contestant Susan Boyle's debut album "I Dreamed a Dream" opens at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with 701,000 copies sold in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan -- the best sales week for an album in the U.S. this year. 2009's previous high-water mark came when Eminem's "Relapse" sold 608,000 in its opening week. In fact, Boyle's sales frame is the best the chart has seen since AC/DC's "Black Ice" bowed with 784,000 upon its release in October 2008. 700K copies! And get this great stat The arrival of "I Dreamed a Dream" also marks the best opening week for a female artist's debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Boyle beats out Ashanti for t...
