Soderling was down two sets to one and seemingly in trouble in the 4th set, lacking the consistent power and precision on his serve and forehand side that he showed in defeating Roger Federer on Tuesday. But the Swede found his forehand as Berdych lost the contact point on his serve in the final two sets, allowing him to return to the Grand Slam Final that he reached just 12 months ago. He awaits the winner between Rafael Nadal and Jurgen Melzer, with the overwhelming favorite Nadal already penciled into most people's final. The Australian was dominate all throughout despite Jankovic trying to be aggressive in the opening two games of the 2nd set, taking the match in style 6-1, 6-2. That came after Francesca Schiavone became the 1st Italian women to advance to a Grand Slam final, defeating Elena Dementieva 7-6 in the first semifinal, as the Russian's pain was too much for her to continue with her calf injury. The veteran Austrian has achieved that feat in his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, beating Novak Djokovic 6-4 in the final set to advance to the last four at a major for the first time in his career. Despite it also being a case of Djokovic finally playing for not being able to close a match in routine fashion like he should, the match was also more indicative of the way the Austrian is starting to get control of all the talents contained in his game. That has been evident this entire clay court season with his career high ranking and first Last 8 at a major appearance. And with the win today, he will certainly enter the Top 20 for the 1st time in his career. Still though, it will be one of the shocks of all time if he gets to the final, for Rafael Nadal awaits. Robin Soderling has dispatched of Roger Federer here in the quarterfinals of the French Open, taking the match 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, exhibiting why he is firmly a Top 5 player in the world today. The win ended Federer's remarkable 23 match Grand Slam winning streak, as well as his 12-0 record over the man who finally conquered him today. You would have thought that Federer would have a dip of form for Soderling to lose this match, but that was the not the case today. Just like Juan Martin del Porto did to him at the US Open, the Swede just basically hit Federer off the court, dominating with his serve and forehand and over coming a slight leg injury. The key point in the match, besides Soderling holding his serve to start in the 2nd set, was the crucial 5-all game in the third set. The game was stopped in the middle of it thanks to rain.
