The Thread For 3/3/14: The (Needed) End of The Phrase 'African-American"

Image
Of the mini dynamics of blacks winning last night at the 2014 Academy Awards was the always intriguing usage of the phrase "African-American" and how its life span should be in grave condition. Last night, some white controlled media organizations forgot to do their simple two second research and see that Steve McQueen is not an American (thankfully that wasn't the case with Lupita Nyongo from what I have seen). It was such a lazy display that was simply all too predictable and how the term "African-American" has morphed as a second meaning of 'black' in American society. Hey @MSNBC Steve McQueen is not African American. He's British. Really, it's OK to just call him black. — gwen ifill (@gwenifill) March 3, 2014 But... he's British. RT @RollingStone : #12YearsASlave 's #Oscars win makes it the 1st time a film by an African-American has won Best Picture — April (@ReignOfApril) March 3, 2014 MSNBC and Rolling Stones were apa...

Music Thread #1 For 7/19/10: U2 Tops The Richest Artists With ACDC Surprisingly Second

Image
Photo from The Getty Images Who knew that ACDC was still caking ? U2's massive 360° Tour has helped propel the band to Number One on Forbes' annual report on top-earning musicians. Bono and Co. scored the top spot on the list by netting $130 million in the past 12 months. They're followed by AC/DC — who just wrapped their 108-city Black Ice world tour on June 28th — with $114 million. Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen and Britney Spears round out the Top Five. That big tour money can only come from being an established artist, but goodness at their longevity at the top despite them not having a big album released in a while. While U-2 is all over the place, you really don't hear all that much about ACDC, making me very surprised that they are second on that list. Taio Cruz blows himself up, though not literally, in his latest video aptly titled "Dynamite." It may have been preferable after the dreadful "Dirty Picture" song yo blow himself up for jus...

It's whatever : The "Glee - The Music Volume 3: Showstoppers" soundtrack arrives at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart as expected, starting with 136,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. The cast of "Glee" claimed its first No. 1 recently with "The Power of Madonna," when that seven-song EP arrived at the top with 98,000. "Showstoppers" is the third proper full-length soundtrack from the Fox TV show. The first two volumes were released in quick succession last November and December. This third edition includes highlights from the second half of "Glee's" debut season. A forthcoming six-track EP titled "Journey to Regionals" is due on June 8. (Don't peek at its tracklist if you don't want upcoming episodes to be spoiled.) The Rolling Stones with their re-release of "Can't Be Tamed" hit #2 with a 76K, with the weeks' highest debut from the Black Keys ("Brothers") coming in ...
