If He Didn't Have Enough Weak Credentials Already

This morning, Straight jacket All-star lady : Sharron Angle tries to introduce the mosque issue into the Nevada Senate race, sending out this statement: "Our forefathers made it very clear in the U.S. Constitution that people of all faiths have the right to practice their religion here in America. As with all religions, Muslims have the right to worship in New York or Nevada or any state in our nation. However, by supporting the construction of a mosque at Ground Zero, President Obama has once again ignored the wishes of the American people, this time at the expense of victims of 9/11 and their families. They have said overwhelmingly that the location of this mosque is an affront to the memories of their loved ones who were murdered by Islamic extremists on 9/11. Their wishes should be respected. As the Majority Leader, Harry Reid is usually President Obama's mouthpiece in the U.S. Senate, and yet he remains silent on this issue. Reid has a responsibility to stand up and...

The Straight Jacket Award For 8/3/10: Her Honesty Is Comedy

Image
Every Republican strategist probably wants to scream at her at every second of their days : "We needed to have the press be our friend." "We want them to ask the questions we want to answer." Harry Reid is currently the luckiest man in America. For it helps what seemed to be a non-win election shaping out to be another November celebration, thanks to a resident All Star of.....

As Expected

Image
Come on, I hope you did not think that he would say anything different now : With another aid ship steaming towards Gaza, Harry Reid, the second most powerful member of the Democratic Party in the country, issues an oddly-timed statement strongly defending Israel's flotilla raid: "Israel is one of our strongest and most important allies, and the United States stands firmly with Israel at this critical time. "I deeply regret the loss of life in the flotilla incident, including the death of an American citizen. "Israel has an obligation to protect its citizens and therefore has a clear right under international law to prevent weapons from getting in the hands of terrorists determined to target them. Israel indicated it was willing to put in place a process to ensure that legitimate humanitarian relief reached Gaza. Unfortunately this offer was rejected. "Israel has pledged to carry out a transparent and thorough investigation of this incident, and I look ...

The Straight Jacket Award For The Day #2 For 4/20/10: Crazy Candidates Like This Will Get Harry Reid Re-Elected

Image
One of the Republicans trying to knock off troubled Majority Leader Reid in Nevada this November is a crazy lady named Sue Lowden. I never heard of her until today, so my eyes did open when she said just that. In her much maligned and insane health care policy of saying patients should barter with their doctor's for prices that leaked out last week, this lady stood steadfast in her way out of the reality stream policy: Bartering for price deals with the doctors, oh my goodness. It's so innovative in its craziness that Lowden clearly deserves her first ..... .....Straight Jacket Award with Mr. TanCrazo .

The Daily Open Thread For 3/11/10: Quentin Tarentino To Become A Smurf

Stewart on Massa, good times: The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon - Thurs 11p / 10c Sour Gropes www.thedailyshow.com Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Health Care Reform The Important After initial reports that everything didn't seem too bad, it appears though sadly that Harry Reid's wife and daughter sustained some serious injuries in a car accident a few hours ago . I don't know why initials reports form his spokesperson said the injuries weren't serious. His wife has a broken nose, a broken back, and a broken neck from reports, and his daughter has suffered facial lacerations. Prayers for them indeed may you please have time for. This lateness news about Scott Brown having a scandal back in the day shows how great of a campaign Martha Coakley ran. Maybe it was the Power of the Truck hat stopped it from even happening. Just two days after the historic day in DC, Mexico has their own record making day with gay marriages . The Miscellaneo...

The Bunning Senate Takeover Is Over........Sort Of

Image
Reporters are now allowed back on the Senate elevator ! Under increasing pressure from Democrats and members of his own party, Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) Tuesday night abandoned his one-man filibuster of a one-month extension to unemployment benefits and other programs. In the end Bunning agreed to a deal allowing him one vote on an amendment to pay for the bill’s $10 billion cost. That proposal was offered by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) last Thursday at the start of his filibuster, but Bunning rejected it because he feared his amendment would not pass. And what about the nominations that he also pledge to block a few hours ago ? To ensure the deal is enforced, Bunning has placed a hold on all the items included in the nightly “wrap up,” which normally entails a unanimous consent agreement to pass noncontroversial nominations and bills, a GOP aide said. Once the votes have taken place that hold would be lifted, the aide explained...

The Break For 2/24/10: The "Little/Tiny" Jobs Bill Has Passed (6 GOP Senators Flip From "No" Vote On Cloture)

Image
AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais By a 70-28 vote, as disguise Republican Ben Nelson votes as such. Will get the full roll call in a second, as a lot of news is happening right now. The full vote , as Lautenberg for obvious reasons) and Kay Hutchinson (remember that Texans for governor) were absent. And the hypocrites would voted "no" on cloture two days but voted "yes" today to claim they fully supported the Jobs bill all alone were, surprise, Republicans. And their names are Alexander, Cochran, Inhofe, LeMieux, Murkowski and Wicker. The BS continues. And notice from the Associated Mess's Andrew Young : The measure passed by a bipartisan 70-28 and now goes back to the House, which passed a far more ambitious version in December. (bolded by me) A "more ambitious version" that, you know, actually paid for much more jobs?

Can COBRA Please Be Extended For Way More Than 15 Days?

Image
As the "Jobs for Main Street Act" possibly gets a final vote tomorrow , lost in the discussion of the bill has been the absence of a needed extension for unemployment benefits. Now Harry Reid has already pledged an extension for COBRA (The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation ACT for those who wanted the know the technical meaning of COBRA like me). That piece of news seems like "problem solved, right?" Well, that's until you see that the Senate Majority Leader has pledged the extension for only 15 days . To say Reid's move is "beyond baffling" is being polite. And it's getting the deserved criticism that it merits: "Unemployment offices are really really going to have a huge problem," said Judy Conti, a lobbyist for the NELP. "They can't handle this two-weeks-at-a-time stuff. It keeps them in a constant state of flux. This is going to create more work for them when they can least afford it." Rich Hobbie...

Brown Among Five GOP Senators To Push Jobs Bill To Final Vote, Ben Nelson Votes "No"

Image
Along with the Maine duo of Collins & Snowe, Ohio's Voinovich, and one Kit Bond, Scott Brown has voted on cloture for Harry Reid's job bills to move it to a final vote. Those five Republicans offset Ben Nelson, who decided to be bipartisan the other way as usual by voting with the rest of Republicans against bringing it to the floor. The final cloture vote was 62-30, and we shall see if this will be the final result overall. David Dayen has some good tidbits on how some Republicans once again voted against a bill where some of their suggestions/provisions were actually placed in the bill. Some fun facts while we wait for the final tally: Orrin Hatch co-authored the centerpiece of this micro-bill, the job creation tax credit. He voted against bringing it to the floor. Chuck Grassley co-authored all the pieces in the bill and has expressed in particular support for the provision allowing small businesses to write off capital expenditures. He voted against cloture. While Reid Supports Public Option Reconciliation News Gets The Pub, Feinstein's Move Is Just As Newsworthy

Image
Let's hope it's not a "Whatever happens in Vegas, stay in Vegas" type deal as one commentator named accumbens at the Kos said . Greg Sargent reports that Harry Reid, in a day where him and President Obama were state hopping in Nevada, will support reconciliation through a public option : With more and more Senators signing on to the letter urging Reid to hold an up or down vote on the public option under reconciliation rules, Reid spokesman Rodell Mollineau sends over a statement signaling Reid’s qualified support for the move: Senator Reid has always and continues to support the public option as a way to drive down costs and create competition. That is why he included the measure in his original health care proposal. If a decision is made to use reconciliation to advance health care, Senator Reid will work with the White House, the House, and members of his caucus in an effort to craft a public option that can overcome procedural obstacles and secure enough vo...

"We Can't Pass The Senate Bill"

Image
Realizing that passing the Senate bill as it stands would be potentially very damaging, the last coalition of figures in the way of a monstrosity bill going into law has told the Speaker of the House they cannot pass the Senate bill. The meeting, which took place not too long ago, re-emphasizes the drama of the situation aggrandizing by the millisecond “We cannot support the Senate bill — period,” is the message that liberals delivered to the Speaker, Dem Rep Raul Grijalva told me in an interview just now. Some had hoped Pelosi would push liberals to get in line behind this approach, in hopes of expediting reform, but that didn’t appear to happen in this meeting. Pelosi mostly listened, Grijalva said, adding: “We didn’t get any declarative statement from her.” The immense pressure that everyone is in could lead to a standoff between both chambers of Congress Tellingly, House liberals also urged Pelosi to consider passing individual pieces of reform through the House as indivi...

Trent Lott Was Swiftboated!!!

You know, before swiftboated was even a word. It is a feeling that is generated though for those who somehow agree with new Civil Rights leader John Cornyn's ridiculous opinion that Reid's comments (from almost two years ago by the way) were way more harmful than Lott's infamous support and praise of racist Strom Thurmond. "Frankly, I don't expect Sen. Reid to resign. What this is about is his hypocrisy and the hypocrisy of folks on the other side when Trent Lott said something that was far more innocuous than the racially tinged comments that Sen. Reid made," Cornyn said this morning on MSNBC. I don't know what was more impressive in this interview from Cornyn. His ability to use the word "innocuous" or his ability to somehow show himself more of an idiot that he already is. But don't thank Chuck Todd and Savannah Guthrie (on their debut show today) for giving this sad cowboy the platform to first explain his "Reid should resign...

The Top 3 Smackdowns For 2009

There were plenty of epic smackdowns this year. But these top 3 selections are both stinging and short, making them truly deserving of extra praise and attention. 3) President Obama giving CNN's Ed Henry a stinging one about patience and rational thinking from a President after Henry annoying asked "why his reaction to AIG bonuses" wasn't faster. Oh, this was a great one from March: 2) Unexpectedly, Harry Reid labeling David Broder as a guy retired who writes a column once in a while was so stinging and unexpected that it truly earned itself as a strong runner up (From the :22 mark). This moment from over a month ago will certainly be in good cheer by those who can't stand Broder, even if they also aren't part of Harry Reid's fan club. 1) And the number one smackdown for me, for this entire year, goes to Debbie Stabenow and her brilliant humbling of the misogynist that is Jon Kyl. It was certainly a moment to behold, as Kyl was arguing against insurance ...

Health Care Reform Chronicles Thread #1 For 12/11/09: Oh Harry And His "Spine" Showing Corruption

Image
It is pretty amazing how the "spineless" label gets placed on Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, when the thing most concerning about him is his sneaky corporate ways. The latest evidence that you are about to read further exhibits the treachery he can bring on the nation. First, take a look at this : A loophole in the Senate health care bill would let insurers place annual dollar limits on medical care for people struggling with costly illnesses such as cancer, prompting a rebuke from patient advocates. The legislation that originally passed the Senate health committee last summer would have banned such limits, but a tweak to that provision weakened it in the bill now moving toward a Senate vote. But this was suppose to never happen, and Obama certainly didn't want that at all: When President Obama gave his speech on health care on September 10 , he promised that there would be no limit on lifetime benefits under the health care bill: They will no longer be able to plac...

Not Going To Take It Anymore

Over the last few weeks, whether for good or bad, Harry Reid has really shown a streak at not backing done of late. First, his unbelievably hilarious diss at David Broder two Saturdays ago, which could be the funniest smackdown of the year in Congress: Memorable. Today, Reid continued to slamback anyone who slams him. First, Republicans urged that Reid apologized for this comments on : Yesterday, Reid said: “Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all Senate Republicans can come up with is: ‘Slow down, stop everything and start over.’ If you think you’ve heard these same excuses before, you’re right.” He cited as examples slavery, women’s suffrage, and civil rights. Which prompted Republicans to slam Reid for comparing them to proponents of slavery, oppression of women, and racism — and to demand an apology. Asked to respond today, Reid said: “I think the point is quite clear, by this point, that at pivotal points in American history, the tactics of distortion, delay have c...

Reid Calls Out Gregg And Republicans For Continued Blatant Obstruction

Last night, Hackio released Republican liar Judd Gregg letter to his fellow Republican colleagues of how they could continue to slow the pace of health care reform in the Senate. Well today, Harry Reid, with another rare moment of strength, called Gregg and his obstructionist colleagues out for their continued disturbing ways . "[T]he Republican plan we've waited weeks and months to see [is] not even about health care at all," Reid said on the Senate floor this morning. "The first and only plan Senate Republicans could be bothered to draft is an instruction manual on how to bring the Senate to a screeching halt." "The Senate might be interested to learn that the architect behind this blueprint is none other than the Ranking Member of the Budget Committee, the senior Senator from New Hampshire," Reid said. "It's worth noting that this Senator - who, more than any other, often speaks publicly about how to properly use citizens' tax dolla...

The Catch Up On Many Things Thread For 10/28/09:

Busy with many things today outside of TWD everyone, so sorry for the delay. But here's the runthrough: Public Option Health Care News While most were focusing on the LIE-bera--hole show yesterday with the Senate, the bigger story probably was in the House. A robust public option, something Nancy Pelosi said was going to happen in her chamber, is in serious danger actually. The negotiation rates need to keep premiums at 10-11% in comparison to typical private insurers being truly strong instead of the negotiated rates that the Blue Dog/conservative nutcases want. Without that, the public option, though still a public option at day's end, is not as strong as it should be. And, as Jon Walker said in that link, it IS A Slap in the face to the working class. That would be around a $1,400 reduction in premiums for the average family that could choose the robust public option. Forcing Americans to pay roughly $1,400 more a year on health insurance premiums, by denying them the cho...

Stay Strong, Majority Leader!

Image
So what if that A-hole from Connecticut did the expected thing from him by becoming an attention whore again for his own smugness to be satisfied? Who gives a damn?! His arrogance will be on the wrong side of history just like it always is. I don't know what could give one so much pleasure about being proud of what's wrong in American government, but so be with A-holes though. You never know what crazy is in their brains and all? But what most think in this country is that you, Senator Reid, have the support of the nation on this. We are behind you in pushing (at the very least) the opt-out right down an a--holes throat and his lobbies crony friends. We are behind you on staying strong as you were in telling the White House how the public option needed to be in the Senate bill on the floor. You were strong enough to tell Olympia Snowe's triggers to go the place were they needed to rightfully go. And you have the strength to either tell Joe Lieberman and any other corpo...

The One Sentence Thread For 10/26/09: Mean Old Partisan

Harry Reid is a big ultra-partisan meanie after all for hurting Olympia Snowe's feelings.

President/Empress Snowe, Shove It!

Image
"She is a good Senator, but I'm disappointed that she has been frightened on a public option." "Hopefully Senator Snowe will see the wisdom of a public option." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAhahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You hear that Senator Snowe???? Your BS FAILS. No matter how hard you (and yes, you too "Trigger Man" Emmanuel) tried to push the Trigger idea down people's throats, no one RATIONAL wants this corporate give away for your corporate masters. If gave Harry Reid of all people spine, then it says how much your ability to deceive the American people isn't even good to pull a fast one to make him cave to you and your horrendous thought of a dishonest idea. The nation DOES NOT want your, Wellpoint, Cigna, BlueCross and all the rest of your immoral cronies damn trigger. Of course the fight is only going to get more fierce from here. And celebrat...
