The Sports Thread #1 For 5/2/14: The Petty Team

Focus: How Floyd Mayweather Revealed That Despite Everything He Has, He is Still A Fool  Photo From Mayweather's Twitter In case you needed another reminder to this fact that won't improve your life one single iota, Floyd Mayweather is the highest paid current athlete in the world now. More than LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. More than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. More than Miguel Cabrera. More than even Peyton Manning and Tom Brady combined. He is an still undefeated and considered pound for pound the #1 boxer, even if his ducking (which will be addressed later in this column) is maybe the greatest thing about his career. He is about to have another one-sided victory over a far inferior opponent that will lead to him getting another $32 million pay check. But no matter how he has made a living now at being able to dupe thousands of people into playing for his ridiculously overpriced PPV fights against fighters who will never be ask quick as he is (including y...

Sports Saturday #3 For 5/1/10: Mayweather Outclasses Old Mosley, Still Is Scared Of Mosley

Image
Photo from Getty Iamges' Ethan Miller Mosley hurt him the second round, but after that, Mayweather made the adjustment and Mosley showed why 38 is a big differnce from 32. After the fight, Mayweather continued his cowardice "moral highground" BS by not wanting anything changed about his condition with Pacquiao. To reiterate for those who still need to be reminded, here is what the Pac Man said last night : Pacquiao, who watched the fight in the Philippines, told Manilla radio station DZBB that he would agree to blood testing, but only if it is not taken within 24 days of the fight. That is basically the same stance that derailed the fight the first time around. "For me, as long as the drug test is not done close to the match, I'll agree because if they'll get blood from me close to the match, it will be a disadvantage for me because I'm smaller and he's big," Pacquiao said. Yet Fairweather, as Skip Bayless calls him, is still too too sc...

Sports Saturday Thread #4 For 4/3/10: And Let This Be The End For Both

Image
So embarrassing was this fight that the folks in attendance didn't even dare give these two legends in their sadly long and ridiculously late rematch a standing ovation in the final moments of the night. So hopefully, after Hopkins dominance of Jones tonight in a forgettable contest, these two will be able to sail on. Hopkins has already done this, while I hope Roy is financial stable and pursues other areas so he can never thank about coming into the ring again.

Sports Thread #1 For 1/6/09: Arum Says The Fight Is Off Again

Image
Photo from AP's Joe C.Hong One sided is this perspective of the fight breaking down when the news breaks, but I guess Arum is the only one who will give up quotes : Two days of mediation and negotiation hoping to save the proposed March 13 megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr ended Wednesday with no deal, and Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, said "The fight is off." "Floyd Mayweather walked away," Arum said by phone late Wednesday night. "The fight's off. Our guy was agreeable, Mayweather wasn't. The fight's off." He further added "It's not surprising. I always felt that he wasn't going to do the fight. He knows Manny will beat him. Mayweather's never stepped into the ring with a guy he had any question but that he was going to beat. "That's why there's never been a (Shane) Mosley, there's never been a (Antonio) Margarito, there never was a (Miguel) Cotto, and there's no Pacquiao. ...

Sports Thread #1 For 12/3/09: Roy Jones, Please Retire Now

Image
Photo Steve Christo While the casual fans of boxing have turned their attention towards the growing possibility of a Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao megafight like no other, some fans of the pugilistic sport may have seen a former great fighter signal his need to retire. Now. Roy Jones Jr. continued to tarnish his formerly legendary legacy by getting knocked out by some guy named Danny Green yesterday in Sydney....... 36 seconds into the fight . A first round knockout at the hands of the anonymous Aussie delivered Jones his worst loss of his career. Worse than getting a straight left hook to Antonio Tarver in the 2nd round of their rematch fight. Worse than getting pummeled by then journeyman Glen Johnson a few fights later. If Jones had won his fight, just like Bernard Hopkins did against little known Enrique Ornelas in Philadelphia , then both him and Hopkins would have encountered each other in a long awaited rematch of their first fight won by Jones in 1992. Both had to win in...

Sports Thread For 12/1/09: Floyd-Manny Fight On Line For Either March Or May 2010

Image
Says the great Dan Rafael The proposed super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is getting closer. Mayweather agreed to terms for the welterweight title bout on Tuesday, multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN.com. The proposed date is March 13, although there is a chance it could move to May 1, sources said. Mayweather, according to a source close to him, is OK with either date. Now the latter date could become as a problem as Rafael describes, because of Pacquiao facing eligibility issues for trying to become a Congressional figure in the Philippines. And the whole prize money split hasn't been even ironed out yet it seems. But the progress towards this fight is happening fast and frantic.

Sports Thread#1 for 10/21/08- Where has all the boxing gone?

Image
Will the state of boxing be falling down, like Antonio Tarver in this picture only time will tell (AP Photo/Eric Jamison) Attention all TWD readers, I am looking for a sport. This sport has been around for centuries, and up until the mid-90s was one of the most popular sports in the world. Some of the greatest American figures have come from this sport, but now it is a relative unknown. I was introduced to it as some kind of mythical thing, a sport only real men could do. I can recall nights my father would leave to go with friends to go watch it late at night. I remember the first time I was invited to one of these festive events, and how the sport captivated me with the amount of skill and drama this one event possessed. The way it quieted the men’s debates on who was the greatest ever, and made them watch with wonder and awe on how someone could do this as a living. I remember the unity the room was filled with as friends sat, ate, and discussed amongst friends. The sport that I am...
