The Awards Stupidity For 7/8/10: Emmys Give Conan A Nomination Sweep, And Give A Damn About Leno

Wearing an Emmy despite just 7 months, thanks you Jeff Zucker for making history happen : It was on the air for only seven months and NBC didn't campaign for him, bit The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien swept the Emmy categories for best variety music or comedy series, landing 4 nominations, including for best VMC series. Its predecessor/successor, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno didn’t get a single nod. In fact, Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien was the only late-night broadcast talk show to make the cut in the top VMC series category, joined by Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and Colbert Report, HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and NBC's sketch comedy Saturday Night Live. And that was not it: The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien also got nominated for writing, directing and art direction. A lot of sentimental voting here. And who knows, those ads O’Brien’s new employer TBS ran in his support may have helped too… He just make go down as the worst tV executive ever, Mr. Zuck...

The royal screw up of epic proportions has lead to them admitting it NBC Chairman Jeff Gaspin kicked off his network’s portion of the TCA press tour by confirming the worst kept secret in the TV biz: “I can confirm, starting Feb. 12, The Jay Leno Show will no longer air at 10 p.m.” Gaspin said that, “While [Leno] was performing at acceptable levels for the network, it did not meet our affiliates’ needs, and we realized we had to make a change. My goal right now is to keep Jay, Conan [O'Brien], and Jimmy [Fallon] as part of our late-night lineup. I have spoken to all of them and proposed that The Jay Leno Show move to 11:35, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien to 12:05, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon would then start at 1:05. “As much as I’d like to tell you we have a done deal, that’s not true,” he added. “The talks are ongoing. [But] I hope and expect, before the Olymics begin, we will have everything set. I can’t imagine we won’t.” Though there’s been no official word yet fro...

The Tube For 1/7/10: Jeff Zucker Really Is Feeling Down

What a disaster , as it looks like there will be at least no more Leno show at 10. But it is more than just the subpar ratings that are the reason for this whole switch looking like it will blow up in face of the Chief of NBC Universal That's because the affiliates are upset about Leno as the lead-in to their local newscasts, most of whose ratings have suffering because of Jay's late night numbers in 10 PM primetime. Those news shows have been cash cows for the O&Os and affiliates whose general managers are now spitting mad these profit centers are threatened. In fact, NBC just now took the unusual step of issuing a statement about the FTV Live report saying Leno's show will be cancelled without at first issuing a straight denial, which came later from the network. Here's the first NBC statement: “Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It ...
