TWD Saturday Sports Thread #2 For 12/7/13: Auburn Wins The SEC in the Conference Greatest Year Ever

Image
Final: Auburn 59, Missouri 42 A wonderful season concludes with a wonderful end for the Auburn Tigers, in the best season of SEC football ever, what a season it has been. — Andrew Jerell Jones (@sluggahjells) December 8, 2013 Halftime: Auburn 28, Missouri 27  Representing how wild this SEC has been this year, a first half that had Auburn dominate on the ground through Tre Mason, only to give up three fumbles by Nick Marshall and keep Missouri firmly in this great battle of the Tigers.  But the play that will have Guz Malzahn further wondering how his team hasn't put this game away is the deep pass from James Franklin to Dorial Green-Beckham at the end of the half (up above) that resulted in the Black and Gold being down by just one at the break.  SEC Title Game Pregame Thread  The list of great winners of this SEC Championship:   I favor Auburn's miracle to continue, but this could go either way with how great these teams ar...

TWD Saturday Sports Thread #1 For 11/30/13: The Malzahn Miracle 2: The Sequel (Final Recaps)

Image
Iron Bowl Final: Auburn 34, Alabama 28  Even with maybe the greatest conclusion ever in NCAA football history, Auburn or Missouri may still not go to the BCS title game if Ohio State and Florida State win their respective conference title games next Saturday. It is something that is already simmering heavy in SEC waters, with a major fear of them being locked out of the main title game.  And it will be highly unfair for Ohio State to get jumped by Auburn or Missouri (because South Carolina won't jump anybody) after beating a tough Michigan State team with arguably the best defense in the nation.  But first, let's emphasize how Alabama's lack of a special teams coach haunted them again. It was the right decision for Nick Saban to try and kick the field goal with freshman Adam Griffith spelling a nightmare day for Caleb Foster. But how he didn't factor in Chris Davis great return ability there turned out to bite him in the you know what.  More a...

The S-Thread For 11/19/12: The BS of The BSECS Continues

Image
Alabama is not the 2nd best team in the nation, Georgia certainly is not the 3rd best team in the nation, and for sure Florida is not the 4th best team in the nation (and that's even if they get fortunate to win in Tallahassee on Saturday, even though they should lose soundly to a more talented and versatile Florida State team). This just speaks to the larger and overinflated power of the Southeastern Conference and its continued cartel and ownership over the overall cartel that is college football in America. It kind of was an unexpected (and pleasant) shock of reality that South Carolina, top 10 the last several weeks despite having two defeats, is now suddenly out of it. Is there some direct reason why the two loss Gamecocks were still good enough to be in the top 10 until it struggled against Wofford while Florida remains at #4 (ahead of now one loss sides Oregon and Kansas State) after just barely surviving Louisiana Lafayette and being awful against Jacksonville...

TWD Saturday Sports Thread For 11/5/11: SEC Game of the Year- LSU/Alabama

Image
Photo from Getty Images' Streeter Lecka It's not the "Game of the Century." And it really shouldn't be the game of the year if Oklahoma hadn't goofed badly against Texas Tech at home. Nevertheless, it is always special when #1 and #2 play each other during the season and are from the same conference. And with CBS/ESPN hype to go along with it, even the biggest cantankerous critic of the SEC being annoyingly thrown into our faces will have to acknowledge its massiveness. The game really comes down to whether Jarett Lee (and/or Jordan Jefferson) will outplay A.J. McCarron, or viceversa. McCarron has enjoyed tremendous protection this year from that terrific line of Alabama, and it will be telling if he will enjoy that same time in the pocket this year to keep his 67% completion number high. Both teams will look to find some way to establish the run against these formidable defenses. But I just think the growth of Lee, a quarterback who not only resists ma...

Sports Saturday #2 For 9/25/10: SEC West Game Of The Year, Alabama vs Arkansas

Image
Champions stay calm even in moments of deep adversity. That was exhibited today by the Alabama Crimson Tide, coming back from a 20-7 deficit to defeat dangerous Arkansas 24-20. Despite Mark Ingram showing why he won his Heisman Trophy last year and Nick Saban's team fighting through the struggles to get a satisfying victory, the game was really lost today by the Razorbacks. Star quarterback Ryan Mallet made two awful throws that he will think about for his entire career in the final quarterback. Forgettable interceptions that led to an Alabama touchdown to take the lead, and the one that effectively ended the game made this one a bitter pill to swallow for Bobby Petrino.

Bracket Sunday Thread #1, A Sports Sunday Special For 3/14/10: Will Your Bubble Survive?

Image
You can't blame Jarvis Varnado from feeling dejected like that. The Kentucky Wildcats have won the SEC in a thriller over a Mississippi State team that will be thinking about defeat for a lifetime if they are not selected by the tournament committee today. 75-74 was the final, and it was a satisfying feeling for John Caplipari's team, as they somehow managed to win a game they shouldn't have won. But they did, making tenuous times for Varnado, the outstanding duo of Barry Stewart and Ravern Johnson, and the rest of the Bulldogs.

Sports Saturday Thread #2 For 12/5/09: McElroy Brilliant As Tide Get Revenge, Dominate Gators To Win The SEC

Image
Coming into the 2009 Southeastern Conference title game, there were many doubters as to whether Grey McElroy was going to be the difference maker that Tim Tebow was on the other side of the ball. Those doubters, including myself, were rightfully silenced. McElroy was the last cog needed for Nick Saban's side to get revenge over Urban Meyer's outfit, and he turned out with the game of his life. McElroy's efficient display was arguably the key protagonist in the Crimson Tide's resounding 32-13 win over Florida. Not only did the 'Bama signal caller not make any crucial errors in this momentous of games, but McElroy even outplayed his much more decorated counterpart by making many more big plays and complimenting the great one-two punch of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. Ingram cemented himself as a worthy Heisman Trophy candidate, shaking off the hip injury he picked up last week against Auburn. Three touchdowns on the biggest of stages, including a massive 70 plus y...

Sports Saturday Thread #1 For 12/5/09: The SEC Super Bowl

Last year: And now, the Southeastern Conference's ultimate dream, even more bigger than last year, has been released. A title game, virtual Super bowl in their minds between undefeated Florida and undefeated Alabama. Coming into the 2008 version, the Tide were the undefeated team while the Gators had the lone loss to Mississippi. In last year's contest, the difference between these two superpowers of the SEC came down to the quarterback play. Though John Parker Wilson tired his best and didn't cost his team at day's end, it was the game that further added to the Tim Tebow legacy. Without Percy Harvin for that game, Tebow still lead the Gators to two massive touchdowns in the 4th quarter to leave Nick Saban planning for a rematch a year in advance. Well, he and his Tide side have gotten their wish. With both teams having the nation's premiere defenses, it seem the difference in this game would come down to whether Greg McElroy could make more plays than Mr. Tebow. An...

Sports Thread #1 For 11/27/09: Alabama Survives, Wins Iron Bowl Thriller Over Bitter Rivals Auburn

Image
Photo from AP's Dave Martin Greg McElroy has been maligned as possibly the only thing holding back Alabama from winning a national title this year, just like John Parkwer Wilson was last year in my mind. Today though, and especially in the game winning drive he anchored, he sure wasn't a man holding them back from winning the title. He and Trent richardson stepped up on a day where Mark Ingram was bottled in all up against arch nemesis Auburn. 12-0 they go, undefeated just like last year going into the SEC title game. And just like last year, it will be against Tebow, Meyer, and Florida. The most important question, however is this (and CBS help this will be a "No"): Will Florida enter the game in Atlanta with one loss like last year?

Sports Saturday Thread #1 For 11/7/09: SEC on CBS- SEC West Game Of The Year (LSU vs Alabama)

Jordan Jefferson, thanks to Les Myles, was the reason why Florida made LSU forgotten by the rest of the nation until now. And if they don't get the ball to Brandon Lafell and their other outside skill guys, then he will be the reason again. With no thanks to that coach who shows that he can't back up that 2-loss national championship team's momentum for the program. Watch live video from Nomad Temp Channel on Justin.tv

Sports Saturday Thread #3 for 10/17/09: Florida Survives As Sturgis The Hero, Tejada, The Goat

The number one reason why Florida will win the Nationals Title, if they do, will arguably not be Tim Tebow. Instead, it will be Alex Tejada, the Arkansas kicker who really blew it today like no other.

Sports Thread For 9/24/09: BCS BS Football- Ole Miss National Title Hopes In Serious Risk

Image
Photo from Mary Ann Chastian Down 16-3 to South Carolina, with Jevan Snead getting harassed all night long and not looking Heisman like at all. And in the end, the pressure of high expectations and national championship hopes has gotten to Ole Miss, as Houston Nutt's side losses a bitter disappointing game to a South Carolina team not one of the most talented around Columbia in the tenure of Steve Spurrier. The 16-10 loss to the Gamecocks was hampered by arguably Jevan Snead's worst performance ever, as that vaunted Rebel offense looked like a shell of itself throughout the entire game. But credit must also be given to the other quarterback in this game, Steven Garcia. Normally prone to hurt his team with a key mistake in a game, Garcia turned in a heady, mistake free performance that will make the "Ol' Ball Coach" happy indeed. Certainly happy is senior linebacker Eric Norwood, who came back to other USC for games like this and showed his quality, leading the G...

Sports Thread #1 For 9/19/09: Florida Wins, But By 10 Instead Of 100 Over Kriffin & Vols

Tebow knows today if he didn't already that without Harvin or Murphy at WR , his outside guys won't scare anyone. If Meyer is smart, and he is, then he should move Jeff Dumps to Wide Receiver.

Sports Thread #1 for 11/8/08: CFB Preview #1- The Return of Slick Nick

Image
Photo from abcnews.com Well, it is another classic week of what should be memorable games in the SEC and Big 12 (South) this week. The Big 12 (South) has held their end of the bargain by providing us with encounters for generation after generation to remember. That has not been the case however with the SEC this far. But the hype still continues for the possibility of an instant classic to take placein the SEC, and its likely candidate is Saban Bowl II. The Alabama coach leads his number one ranked team into Death Valley to hear the plethora of boos he is going to receive. It's the LSU Tigers and the Crimson Tide, and the emotion of the game will be there. If Alabama wins this one, they will book their ticket to Atlanta for the conference championship game, and possibly seal at least a BCS spot with the win. However, if LSU wins this game, they still will have a shot at defending at least their conference crown, coupled with the pride factor of beating the coach preceding Les Myles...

Sports Thread #1 for 11/1/08: CFB Review #1- A Dog Of A Performance

Image
(From ESPN.com)Tim Tebow's determination and desire to get revenge made it a long, long day for Ugggaaa It was indeed Ugly for uggaaaaa today. With a mix of bad mistakes (interceptions, fumbles, and costly penalities at the worst of times)and lack of fortuition lead to a 49-10 shellacking that really wasn't indicative of the game. Then again, that is what they say sometimes in sports, as well as the adage, "The final score doesn't lie." Either way, Georgia was far form their best today. And to beat this loaded Florida team with this offense, you need to be operating at full optimum to do so. And they certainly weren't. One thing though that will lead a bad taste in my mouth from this comprehensive win by the Gators is the continued "a--hole" like display of Urban Meyer. Hellbent on rubbing this victory in the face of Mark Richt for Georgia having their whole team come onto the field after scoring the opening touchdown in last year's 42-30 Bulldog ...

Sports Thread #1 for 10/25/08: College Football's Big 3 Games This "Satur"Day

Image
(Photos:Colt McCoy pic is from coltmccoyfans.org;Dez Bryant's photo is from www.daylife.com) Another massive, critical Saturday in college football. In fact, and especially in the SEC and Big 12, that has been the case all season, and will be the rest of the way. Surprisingly though, the biggest game of the day maybe Penn State and Ohio State in Columbus, since College Gameday decided to go there this week instead of being in Austin for the mammoth undefeated clash between Texas and Oklahoma State, and the elimination "Do or Die" game in the SEC between Georgia and LSU in Baton Rouge. Make no mistake, we will have a quick preview of the Big 10 game a little later since it is at night time, but the duel 3:30 games of the Big 12 and SEC respectively highlight again how awesome these two conferences are. No talk about a brutal schedule Texas has: Two weeks ago, it was Oklahoma. Last week, it was Missouri. Today, it is the Cowboys, who are desperate to end their ten game los...

Sports Thread #1 for 10/18/08: Big 12, SEC, And The Rest Of CFB Preview

Image
(Photos from google.com) Colt Mccoy and Chase Daniel are apart of a great group of quarterbacks from the state of Texas taking over college football, and certainly, the Big 12 Conference It's another great Saturday today here not only on TWD, but in the world of CFB (College Football). Already, on another Thursday, we come into Saturday action with an upset occurring. BYU, who seriously had an outside chance to possibly get into the national title picture , blew it at TCU, as the 'Frogs ended their nation leading 16- game winning streak and chances of stunningly season ending glory. With BYU out of the picture, that opens the door for their bitter rivals, Utah, to reclaim their sovereignty over the Mountain West conference and return to the BCS for the first time since the days of Alex Smith and Urban Meyer. But our attention on TWD, with no disrespect to the other conferences, and to the great year so far from Penn State (who looks to give Joe Paterno another chance at a Natio...
