Sports Saturday Thread #1 For 12/5/09: The SEC Super Bowl

Last year:

And now, the Southeastern Conference's ultimate dream, even more bigger than last year, has been released. A title game, virtual Super bowl in their minds between undefeated Florida and undefeated Alabama. Coming into the 2008 version, the Tide were the undefeated team while the Gators had the lone loss to Mississippi.

In last year's contest, the difference between these two superpowers of the SEC came down to the quarterback play. Though John Parker Wilson tired his best and didn't cost his team at day's end, it was the game that further added to the Tim Tebow legacy. Without Percy Harvin for that game, Tebow still lead the Gators to two massive touchdowns in the 4th quarter to leave Nick Saban planning for a rematch a year in advance.

Well, he and his Tide side have gotten their wish.

With both teams having the nation's premiere defenses, it seem the difference in this game would come down to whether Greg McElroy could make more plays than Mr. Tebow. And with that possibility being unlikely, most thank that Florida will continue their quest to back to back national titles.

Then, all of a sudden, Carlos Dunlap, Florida's best pash rusher (and one of the best in the nation by the way) got caught with DUI earlier this week. And that ultimatly brutal mistake by the junior defensive end could really swing the balance slightly to Alabama there.

Dunlap is that key of a player, and without his ability to penetrate the backfield, that may embolden Greg McElroy and his coordinators to take shots down the field at Florida's aggressive cornerbacks Joe Hayden and Janoris Jenkins.

On the other side of the ball, Saban was very disappointed with his defense last year, especially with the Florida offense scoring on them without Harvin in the crucial moments in the game.

He's been planning this all year, and really, Javier Arenas should not have any Florida wide receiver, Riley Cooper or DeAndre Thompson, go by him at all.

Still, despite Dunlap's loss and Florida's lack of weapons on the outside, I still don't have full confidence in McElroy today to win this game.

He win need to win this game, and despite leading his team on a game winning drive against bitter rival Auburn last week, I just don't think he will do it again.

And with that, Florida will repeat as the SEC Champion and place Florida in the National Title game this year:
