The Saturday Open Thread #1 For 1/30/10

Oh De La Soul (even though it is much warmer in this video than it is in the Northeast), "It's Saturday, Saturday, Saturday." Al Franken, introducing another meaningful bill at the perfect time . Since 1974, federal law has banned foreign companies from giving or spending in American elections. Nothing in our current laws, however, explicitly prohibits foreign companies from creating American subsidiaries or getting control of American companies and using them to flood the airwaves in support of their preferred candidates. Citizens United gives companies unlimited power to do that - and does not distinguish between American companies and companies that are owned or controlled by foreign interests. The royal screw up of epic proportions has lead to them admitting it NBC Chairman Jeff Gaspin kicked off his network’s portion of the TCA press tour by confirming the worst kept secret in the TV biz: “I can confirm, starting Feb. 12, The Jay Leno Show will no longer air at 10 p.m.” Gaspin said that, “While [Leno] was performing at acceptable levels for the network, it did not meet our affiliates’ needs, and we realized we had to make a change. [But] I hope and expect, before the Olymics begin, we will have everything set. I can’t imagine we won’t.” Though there’s been no official word yet fro...

What a disaster , as it looks like there will be at least no more Leno show at 10. But it is more than just the subpar ratings that are the reason for this whole switch looking like it will blow up in face of the Chief of NBC Universal That's because the affiliates are upset about Leno as the lead-in to their local newscasts, most of whose ratings have suffering because of Jay's late night numbers in 10 PM primetime. Those news shows have been cash cows for the O&Os and affiliates whose general managers are now spitting mad these profit centers are threatened. In fact, NBC just now took the unusual step of issuing a statement about the FTV Live report saying Leno's show will be cancelled without at first issuing a straight denial, which came later from the network. Here's the first NBC statement: “Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It ...
