The Sports Thread #1 For 5/5/15: 2014-15 UEFA Champions League Semifinal #1 - Juventus vs Real Madrid (Second Version)

Image
Half-Time Version  It looked as if Ancelotti's gamble to not play a forward up front would back fire, as there was no outlet for his midfield to go up top to anyone for most of the first half. Here is a prime example of that, as neither Bale nor Ronaldo was in the box despite Real being well into Juventus' half.  This was not the only time this occurred. With the backline rattled as Iker Casillas continues to look shaky, Allegri's side was given a real opportunity to at least be the ones in control of this tie when halftime came. Marcelo had a terrible first half and lacked communication with Isco, which helped lead to those two and Varane not following Tevez, whose shot basically acted as an assist for Morata's goal against his former side.   But the aforementioned Isco and James Rodriguez, for any deficiencies they may have defending sometimes, really provided the spark for Real to snatch the momentum of the game away from the hosts. James, alo...

The Sports Saturday Thread #3/UEFA Champions League Final Thread #3 For 5/24/14: Dramatic End Sees Real Reach La Decima (Final Version)

Image
Fulltime (ET): Real Madrid 4-1 Atletico Madrid  Sergio Ramos' heroics, and a tried Atletico side, spelled the difference as Real Madrid received their long coveted 10th European Cup title.  Full review to come in other outlets, but for now, the pictures and celebration take all the headlines.  It's been another wonderful season in UEFA Champions League play, as Real Madrid now extend their most continental cup championships lead over AC Milan to 3 as the great Italian club have 7. Take care and so long to the UEFA Champions League for this season, until it all starts again in August. (Enjoy all the prematch and midmatch stuff below): Halftime: 'Baked Iker" Mistake Leads To Godin Giving Atletico The 1-0 Lead  Gareth Bale's agony face was less painful for Madrid than the one Iker Casillas's face featured after allowing this.  Really for Madrid, Ronaldo has to come back further up instead of waiting for Di Maria, Modric, a...

The Sports Thread/UEFA Champions League Final Thread #1 For 5/24/14: Looking For The RightBacking From Del Bosque

Image
First Thread Focus: How JuanFran and Daniel Carvajal Are Playing For More Than Champions League Glory  With every UEFA Champions League final, much is obviously at stake. But unlike any final in the 22-year old reformation of the European Cup, the ultimate match in Lisbon today has its own unique elements. The whole all-Madrid final, as well as seeing if Atletico could achieve an unfathomable double or if Real can finally end its global community's long (and very annoying for some) obsession for La Decima, gives this campaign's decider an appeal like any of the 21 that preceded it. However, while the dynamics on club football have received the most attention from this crosstown final, the dynamics of what this contest has on the World Cup, in particular the Spanish national team, will certainly hold equal importance for both sides. This is the match before Vincente Del Bosque narrows his provisional 30 man list to the final 23 man squad tomorrow morning, and will se...

The Break/Sports Thread #2 For 5/26/10: Pellegrini Gone From Madrid, In Comes Mourinho

Image
Photo from Shaun Botterill/Getty Images One of the worst kept secrets/inevitable events of 2010 : Real Madrid says it is to sign Jose Mourinho as its new coach once he negotiates an end to his contract with Inter Milan, and that it has sacked Manuel Pellegrini. The deal was announced by club president Florentino Perez at the Santiago Bernabeu late Wednesday. Neither Mourinho nor Pellegrini was present at a news conference at the Bernabeu when Perez made the announcement. Now the Barca-Real El Classico Liga blood bath officially reaches even a higher level than ever before.

Sports Saturday Thread #2 For 4/10/10: Ain't No Stopping Them

Image
Photo from Getty Images' Dennis Doyle I don't even think all the armies in the world could stop Barcelona, as the Catalyan giants continued their rise to a historic dynasty by defeating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu 2-0 behind goals from Lionel Messi in the 33rd (who else?) and Pedro Rodriguez in the 56th minute. It really did seem this time that Real missed the presence of Kaka' in this all crucial virtual league decider, as there was not a clear cut chance at all in this game for Cristiano Ronaldo and company, while Pep Guardiola's side exhibited the class that make them the best in the world by a long long mile at the moment. Xavi was outstanding in this contest, as Barcelona didn't miss Zlatan Ibrahamovoic and Andres Iniesta (until he was substituted later in the game) unlike Madrid's deficiency without Kaka. And the defending champions in five competitions last season sure look poise to add to their massive mantle, as they are surly the clear favorites ye...

Sports Sunday Thread #2 For 11/29/09: BBVA La Liga- Barcelona vs Real Madrid

Image
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's 56th minute volley off great work from the offensively minded fullback Dani Alves has placed Barcelona back on top of La Liga in their El Classico first derby with Real Madrid this year. Both teams ended with 10 men, as Sergi Busquets was sent off of in the 63rd minute, while Lassana Diarra left the pitch in stoppage time. Madrid had their chances and probably should have come out with nothing short of a tie. Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were denied by Victor Valdes and Iker Castillas respectively, though they arguably should have scored with the chances they had. At day's end, once again, Barcelona own Madrid on the final scoreline. But with the standings so tight between these two, the title in La Liga will go down to the wire. And the second meeting in the Spanish's capital later this season could be even more massive.

Sports Thread #2 For 8/29/09: Real Madrid/Departivo La Coruna And The Milan Derby

The La liga opener, and already, Ronaldo has scored on a penalty. And already, Madrid's defense is suspect. Watch live video from cholillo_827 on Justin.tv Meanwhile, the milan Derby is going on. Interesting that Izingahi and not Pato is starting up front for Milan. Watch live video from VIP Sports on Justin.tv Updated : Actually, Pato is on the field.

Sports Thread #1 for 8/6/09: Annoyed With Bringing In Benzema, Huntelaar Leaves Madrid For Milan

Image
Not a surprise considering all the moves, including Benzema coming in AC Milan have agreed a four-year deal with Real Madrid thought to be worth £12.8m for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. The Dutch striker, who turns 26 next week, had been a target for Tottenham but instead will be Milan's first major close-season investment. He scored eight goals for Real having joined in January after three years at Ajax, where he hit 76 in 92 matches. For a guy that didn't get a whole of playing time, thanks in parts to Hinguin and the resurgence of the legendary Raul playing a part, Huntelaar still showed that he can be a force at the highest level. This, along with getting Onyewu, is a shrewd move by AC Milan.

Sports Thread #2 for 6/8/09: Kaka Goes To Real Madrid

Image
Photo from the AP More details on this tomorrow, in order for more news this tickle, but nothing breaking or surprising about this one. Madrid still has a lot of holes and problems in comparison to Barcelona, but they couldn't get a finer combination of an outstanding player and an outstanding man.
