The Sports Thread/UEFA Champions League Final Thread #1 For 5/24/14: Looking For The RightBacking From Del Bosque

Image
First Thread Focus: How JuanFran and Daniel Carvajal Are Playing For More Than Champions League Glory  With every UEFA Champions League final, much is obviously at stake. But unlike any final in the 22-year old reformation of the European Cup, the ultimate match in Lisbon today has its own unique elements. The whole all-Madrid final, as well as seeing if Atletico could achieve an unfathomable double or if Real can finally end its global community's long (and very annoying for some) obsession for La Decima, gives this campaign's decider an appeal like any of the 21 that preceded it. However, while the dynamics on club football have received the most attention from this crosstown final, the dynamics of what this contest has on the World Cup, in particular the Spanish national team, will certainly hold equal importance for both sides. This is the match before Vincente Del Bosque narrows his provisional 30 man list to the final 23 man squad tomorrow morning, and will se...

The Sports Thread #1 For 12/2/13: Diego Costa Still Is Not Guaranteed A Free Trip Back Home For The Cup

Image
Image from Iberosphere.com  It will be fascinating to see who Vicente Del Bosque brings to the World Cup Finals in the forward position for España. With Diego Costa still scoring (now 15 goals in 15 games) for co-Liga leaders Atletico, the Brazilian-Spaniard continues to make his case that maybe he made the right decision to not wait on Luis Scolari and his native country giving him that long awaited "A" team call up during the last international break. But Costa's great form still does not mean he can erase the biggest disadvantage he has currently, which is no caps for Spain yet. He would have to wait until the next international break in March to get that first appearance. That is a problem considering that his four main competitors at the forward spot for Spain have plenty of experience with Del Bosque, with three of the four currently in solid form. The lone man Costa doesn't have to fret about at the moment is Roberto Soldado, who may need a spying a...

The Read International For 8/23/10: News Runthrough

Image
Spanish Journalists are freed from Al Qaeda's captivity. (Photo from AFP) His weird media tour continues : The commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan says the momentum built up by the Taliban has been reversed in the south of the country and capital Kabul. General David Petraeus said it was important to destroy the safe havens of Taliban. He also said he would offer President Obama his best professional advice on the wisdom of handing control to Afghan forces next July. $815.58 million given to Pakistan is still not enough for its epic disaster. But with NATO forces focusing on silly wars, I guess that isn't a surprise indeed. Julian Assange seems to be in the midst of fighting a smear campaign against him, especially after the charges of him raping someone was dropped in Sweden . Sudan, an ally of Iran, is looking to start its own nuclear programme : The Sudanese government is planning to build a nuclear reactor which is first of its kind purposely for peaceful e...

Ramos also was bright getting past Mathijsen, only for Heitinga to be timely. After that, Spain could never find the cutting edge. Pedro showed his class, but could never find Villa, as his future teammate at Barcelona could never find the space up top and had to come back in the midfield out righ...

Sports Thread #1 for 11/26/08: Beleated Congrats To Heroes Verdasco, Lopez and Spain In Their Defeat of Argentina (Davis Cup Final Review)

Image
(Photo from daviscup.com) Jubilee for Spain as they win the Davis Cup on the road, and without Rafael Nadal Make no bones about it, this was another memorable Davis Cup Final for the ages. And despite the fact that it didn't come to a deciding rubber, it was nevertheless a joy to watch. That's of course, if you were a neutral or, even better, a Spaniard. Because of you were an Argentine that day, it was, and still is, a period of national misery. Without Rafael Nadal, Spain looked destined to remain at two Davis Cup titles, as their counterparts looked poised to capture their first international championship in the city of Marta Del Pata. And that outcome seemed inevitable when David Nalbandian scored his 17th Davis Cup tie victory with a comprehensive beating of David Ferrer in the opener. Ferrer, who whenever he plays Nalbandian usually outworks and frustrates him into defeat (hence Ferrer's 6-3 head to head advantage coming into their match), had nothing, and showed th...
