Sports Thread #1 For 9/30/10: The Runthrough

Image
Quick news runthrough here: Getty Images' Joe Robbins A common sense move that needed to happen seems on the verge of being official : There are indications that manager Reds Dusty Baker will sign a contract extension, and that it will happen soon. The Dayton Daily News reported Thursday that Baker and the club were close to a deal that would bring back the 61-year-old skipper. Baker, the Reds' manager since 2008, was offered a new deal in mid-August but has refused to speak publicly about negotiations. The offer was believed to be for at least two seasons. He earned around $10.5 million during his current three-year deal. Alberto Contador really brought a needed level of integrity to the sport of cycling, didn't he? News on the Jets front, as they signed Trevor Pryce away from the Ravens today , while Darelle Revis has been ruled out against the Bills this weekend . David Stern really does represent his last name : Washington Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsi...

Sports Thread #1 For 9/15/10: The Best Take From That Whole Stupid Situation

Image
Photo from Getty Images The best perspective of the whole annoying and disturbing mess that is the Jets-Ines Sainz situation from the always astute (expect when talking about soccer of course) Jemele Hill : But isn't it fair, too, to wonder whether Sainz's flirty, fluffy reporting style might blur the lines for the players? I have a hard time believing the Jets would treat USA Today columnist Christine Brennan, a pioneer for female sports journalists, the way they allegedly treated Sainz. Probably somewhere today, a female reporter is getting harrassed by some immature, classless buffoon, as the struggle for respect for female reporters will always continue, especially those considered attractive. Even with the notorious Lisa Olsen incident reference by Hill in her column, idiots will still be idiots despite the changing times in the ultra-testosterone of male sports (specifically football). But Sainz is a far different case from reputable journalists like Hill, Brennan,...

Sports Thread #1 For 8/10/10: The Runthrough

Image
Photo from The Star-Ledger William The premiere of Hard Knocks on HBO tomorrow won't be happy one for Jets fans, thanks to Woody Johnson not being a smart guy and having his gut deliver a message to his big mouth about Darelle Revis sitting out the entire season. Johnson was just dumb to make those comments public like that yesterday. I could understand (even if he is still wrong) if he kept that sentiment yesterday on Revis inside in his mind and gave Jeremy Schaap a simple "We're still talking and we hope we can strike a deal" line. With the Revis hold out continuing, time in the spotlight is now for Kyle Wilson . It truly is amazing how Percy Harvin has made it this far in that sport with so many migraines . After three misses starts, Stephen Strasburg is back on the hill for the Nationals tonight against the Marlins. It looks like Ilya Kovalchuk could still wind up with the Devils : Lou Lamoriello, the Devils' president and general manager, issu...

Sports Thread #1 For 5/25/10: Super XLVIII Will Be In New York

I wonder how Springstein will handle having a halftime performance in his state, his building, in wonderful -15 degree weather. Hopefully by then climate change will may it 80 year round in New York .

The Break/Sports Sunday Thread #3 For 4/11/10: Santonio Holmes Traded To The Jets

Image
Pittsburgh Steelers Santonio Holmes, the MVP of Super bowl 44, has been traded to the new York Jets, as being reported by Pro Football Talk. Just one week after the shocker of Donovan McNabb being traded to the Redskins, Holmes has been dealt to Rex Ryan's team in a deal that has the Steelers return a 5th round draft pick! Shocking, just shocking.

Sports Saturday Thread #1 For 1/9/10: 2009 NFL Playoffs- Who's Taking Lessons For Who Now?

Image
US Presswire' Kirby Lee Coming into this game, I thought that Mark Sanchez was the only thing holding back the Jets from really being a force in this postseason. With how he performed more like the established veteran than the man he used to be a ball boy for in Carson Palmer, Sanchez along with great coaching today propelled the Jets to a terrific road playoff win today. Additional thoughts. Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall, despite them being solid corners, can't take out a receiver out of the game the way Darell Revis does (then again, who can right now up to his level). And his impact on the field took the Bengals' hopes of stretching the field away for a second consecutive game. And that is a shame considering how brilliant Cedric Benson was today. The fact that he only got 21 carries in this entire game and still produced 169 yards, including the 47 yard touchdown run that gave the Bengals hope in the 4th, is a testament to how he has turned it around in his career. Sports Thread #2 For 12/3/09: Jets Score Clutch Win As Revis Cements His Status As Best CB In The League

Image
Photo from AP's David Duprey A much needed win for the Jets against a Bills team they should have defeated in their first encounter this season. Still, injury concerns once again for Rex Ryan's team, as Mark Sanchez had to leave the game with a right knee injury in the 3rd quarter. But Kellen Clemens didn't make any mistake, and led the team to a big field goal. And what can you say of the marvelous Darrelle Revis , who latest shutdown of Terell Owens solidified how is the league's premiere cover. The Jets go to 6-6, while the Bills, who probably didn't feel too much at home in Toronto, fall to 4-8 and are surly paying for pride now.

Sports Thread #2 For 10/7/09: LeBron Wins- Braylon Edwards Is Traded To The Jets

Image
Gregory Shamus/Getty Images The man gets people not even in his own sport traded out of town. But it had of course much more to do with Edwards wearing out his time with the Browns. We know all about the drops last year, but Edwards to me even lose a gear on his speed at some point last year. He just didn't seem to strike fear into defenses at all, and his effort diminished significantly in 2008. Now part of Edwards' rapid decline was (and still is) because of the Browns' irrational obsession, first with Romeo Crennel and now with Eric Mangini, to play Brady Quinn over proven starter Derek Anderson. It wasn't a coincidence on Sunday that the Browns finally play well when Anderson was in the lineup. At all. Simultaneously though, Edwards lost his cutting edge, and his hard hands that plagued him in at Michigan reared their ugly head last year. The off the field stuff were the final straw for him to egress Cleveland, but Edwards' production was of course the main fact...

Sports Thread #2 For 9/20/09: NFL Week 2, Early Games Review- Backing Up The Talk

It feels so good to see a defense not play prevent defense, but instead play the same defense that made them dominant the whole day. (More to come.)
