Deservedly Scathing

Image
One of America's best journalists who still doesn't get the recognition that he deserves basically held back no punches in highlighting how the Obama Administration has somehow left the Department of Justice in a state of politicization. In an article written today at the Huffington Post, the industrious Dan Froomkin reminded us of the departure of the man tipped to make the closing of Guantanamo Bay be a smooth process. And further reminded us about how his replacement is not the steadfast voice required to steer the Administration to the right direction it advocated for during the campaign. Greg Craig, as Obama's top lawyer, was the point man on a number of hot-button issues, the fieriest being how to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Craig argued for holding fast to the principles that Obama outlined before he became president, regardless of the immediate political consequences -- an idealistic approach that, in a White House filled with increasingly pusillanimous p...

Holder to McConnell, SOP: STFU

Image
Attorney General Eric holder, tired of the idiots that represent the idiot party right now, wrote a letter to their hapless Senate leader in response to their complaining about us trying to uphold to the values of our laws and Constitution. In a letter filled with a straight formal request to stop embarrassing the country, the most stringing point from Holder to McConnell was this: As to whether or not Abdulmutallab should have been allowed access to counsel, Holder offers a doozy: Some have argued that had Abdulmutallab been declared an enemy combatant, the government could have held him indefinitely without providing him access to an attorney. But the government's legal authority to do so is far from clear. In fact, when the Bush administration attempted to deny Jose Padilla access to an attorney, a federal judge in New York rejected that position, ruling that Padilla must be allowed to meet with his lawyer. Notably, the judge in that case was Michael Mukasey, my predecesso...

Not Bad From Holder: Appoints To A Special Prosecutor To Go After CIA Little Ones......But The Big Ones Too? Nah

Image
A lot on the right won't be happy when they see this Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. has decided to appoint a prosecutor to examine nearly a dozen cases in which CIA interrogators and contractors may have violated anti-torture laws and other statutes when they allegedly threatened terrorism suspects, according to two sources familiar with the move. I guess those Blackwater reports of lately from the Nation's Jeremy Scahill and just other things could have possibly pushed this, but maybe that's because I liked Scahill a heck of a lot as a great journalist. A special prosecutor indeed is a step, and this is a big development. But we shall see what happens here. And interesting that this news breaks on the day of vacation week starting for the President now. And notice in that article how Carrie Johnson, the writer of the linked article, continues to used "enhanced interrogation." Tisk, tisk, tisk. Most in the status quo media still won't call it the "T...

Obama and Holder Not Taking Any Chances As Tiller Death Aftermath Continues

Image
Photo from AP Desperate times call for desperate measures "The murder of Doctor George Tiller is an abhorrent act of violence, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers at this tragic moment. Federal law enforcement is coordinating with local law enforcement officials in Kansas on the investigation of this crime, and I have directed the United States Marshals Service to offer protection to other appropriate people and facilities around the nation. The Department of Justice will work to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice. As a precautionary measure, we will also take appropriate steps to help prevent any related acts of violence from occurring."

11/19/08-TWD's Agenda For The Day: Palin Chances At A Senate Seat Vanish With Begich Win Over Disgraced Stevens In Alaska; Plus More

Image
Photo from adn.com Well, Sarah Palin's possible hopes at a Senate seat in 2010 ended last night, as Anchorage mayor Mark Begich defeated convicted felon Ted Stevens in their endless election battle . Begich, the Democratic mayor of Anchorage, widened his lead to 3,724 votes in Tuesday's count of absentee and questioned ballots. The lead is insurmountable, as the only votes left to count are approximately 2,500 ballots from overseas. The Senator-elect comments after hearing the official news of victory: Begich claimed victory, saying, "I am humbled and honored to serve Alaska in the U.S. Senate." Talk about an ironic, peculiar birthday present for the 85 year old curmudgeon Stevens. He was saved the embarrassment of getting rejected by his Republican colleagues and thrown out for good thanks to Begich's victory. So him losing the debate wasn't the worst loss he could have suffered. Then again, to many people's eyes, he is already a loser. With Begich's...
