The Thread For 8/14/14: How Ferguson's Racial Disaster Is The Real "Leading From Behind"

Image
Screenshot from MSNBC In modern day neoconservative and centrist talk, the phrase constantly used for their perspective of President Obama's foreign policy is "leading from behind." Anyone with any barring of facts, common sense and general rationality knows how unhinged the usage of that phrase is. It speaks more to how unstable those people are and how that phrase surely needs a proper example to represent it accurately. That example has arrived in emphatic and unfortunate fashion with the latest American racial horror show in Ferguson, Missouri, thanks to its mayor exhibiting traits that would make Waldo look visible and a police chief whose behavior gives Clancy Wiggum of The Simpsons a sense of competence. Mayor James Knowles hopefully isn't harboring any ideas on running for higher positions in the future, as he has acted like he doesn't know where his town is located on the map since the early aftermath of Michael Brown joining a list of murdered ...

The Thread For 2/28/14: Brother's Private Whimper

Image
Glad to see Jelani Cobb and Imani Perry push back on Hayes last night, and just the overall limits to how private elites can't solve public problems in America by just showing their desire to. It's a shame that it will take a president of color, and probably a black president at that, as the only way we will see a "Brother's Keeper" program. It's even worse when this first step to addressing the obvious structural racist problems is probably the last step we'll see unless the president is not black or Hispanic. And it's what makes the pushback from Perry, Cobb, and even this nicely written peace from Philly's public student union  important for the discussion. 2011 marked the first time in almost 40 years that public school spending decreased in America , as the Obama Administration's addiction to charter schools gives further cover to the for-profit first and only frauds. Public spending now accounts for just 70 cents of every ed...

The Thread For 2/5/14: The Comedy of The Colorless

No matter how much I tried to, and enjoyed a few episodes of the series, I could never fully get into "Seinfeld." Now one of two parts of why I couldn't get into "Seinfeld" was that it was huge when I was still a kid growing up in the 90's, where there was no outward desire for me to watch it. Although my sister's love of the show, from the Soup Nazi to Newman, helped in me not labeling it as a overrated white show lucky to appeal to many white people like I did before watching it, it was still never enough to make me be an indelible fan of the series. It's funny, because ever since the show has ended, we have seen its main protagonists and brains behind the legendary sitcom have incredible contrasts of success. There has been the good (Julia Loui-Dreyfus), the great (Larry David), the bad (Jason Alexander), and the ugly (Michael Richards and that lovable, memorable tirade of racism). In the middle of all that post show history is fittingly...

The Sports Thread #1 For 1/23/14: A Handshake That Never Was

Image
After all the analysis and conversation from sports and non-sports journalists, black and non-black people, and confrontational and non-confrontational people sharing their thoughts on Richard Sherman, let's just get back to the main reason on why he is a crossover star now. I waited to talk about this specifically when I saw the final audio from Sherman on "Inside the NFL" last night after his tip ball denied Michael Crabtree the winning touchdown and sent the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. I wanted to see if he didn't say "Good game" while reaching his hand out to Crabtree before the receiver (who is not a "sorry" receiver by the way) smacked his helmet. After seeing the video and hearing the audio, I believe more strongly that Sherman was being a proper sportsman and thought Crabtree would give him his due respect after making such a fantastic play. It was the type of extraordinary moment to decide a great game where the losing man has ...

The 1st Thread For 11/13/12: "Black" is Not An Evil Word

Image
It's time we simply end the term African-American and just say at least black American. Or if you are not American, you can use "black" so as long as you are not using it for hate or not stereotyping . It's okay, the word "black" is not offensive. The word black is just a description. Now that doesn't mean it hasn't been used for negative connotations. From the time Europeans encountered Africans before the Trans-Continental slave trade began to "Birther Hairpiece" Trump's "I'm good with 'the blacks,'" there are those who really use "black" either in hate or in ridiculous clumsy fashion. Any rational black American or anyone in general should not and would not get offended. See, that is the inherent problem with being "too PC" sometimes in this nation. People overanalyze and are stuck in regressive thought instead of thinking rationally to themselves before being free to opine a thou...
