Sports Thread #1 for 6/30/09: Wimbledon 2009, Ladies Quarterfinals, Serena Williams vs Victoria Azarenka Thread

Image
Venus, Safina and Dementieva are in the semis. And Dementieva is awaiting the winner of this match. Some people think Azarenka will win this match. I don't think that will be the case, at all. But we'll see. 11:06 AM Great start to this match, as both players are hitting and moving beautifully so far. Winners and positive play with no sign of errors. Both are at their best right now. 11:17 Serena with the break, up 4-2. Victoria Azarenka is playing well , but Serena is playing so well at the moment. Now, it is 5-2 Serena. Will Azarenka hold strong? 11:35 AM First set to Serena. And then, survived two break points, and hit three straight aces. Amazing....6-2, 1-0. 11:54 AM Azarenka with the break, she has stayed the course in this match, as she takes a 3-2 lead now in the set. Serena blinked there. 12:01 AM And Serena Williams breaks back, to even the match up at 3-3. 12:10 AM And Serena breaks Azarenka again, and is one game away from another Wimbledon semifinal, as Azarenka ...

Despite John Boehner Immature Grand Standing, Energy Bill Passes In The House

Image
Despite this nutcase Trying to read this sign... And delay the process, the House just passed The Energy Bill to push it to the Senate. This will go under the radar amongst the rest of news with this bill and other stuff going on in the world of course, but still, this bill to some is like passing health care without a public option.

Going Back on Pledge To Close Them, Obama Continues Indefinite Detention

Image
Photo from TPM front page Continuing in some of Bush's policies with this move The Obama administration, fearing a battle with Congress that could stall plans to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, is drafting an executive order that would reassert presidential authority to incarcerate terrorism suspects indefinitely, according to three senior government officials with knowledge of White House deliberations. Such an order would embrace claims by former president George W. Bush that certain people can be detained without trial for long periods under the laws of war. Obama advisers are concerned that bypassing Congress could place the president on weaker footing before the courts and anger key supporters, the officials said. After months of internal debate over how to close the facility in Cuba, White House officials are increasingly worried that reaching quick agreement with Congress on a new detention system may be impossible. Several officials said there is concern in the Whi...

Politico's Michael Calderone Thinks It's Important To Focus On Obama Not Releasing A Statement Yet

Yes Mr. Calderone, like this is a serious thing you need to report on ? Barack Obama hasn't yet made a statement on the death of Michael Jackson, which was confirmed around 7 p.m. last night. The good folks for Hackio there for you. I wonder where is the post about Obama not releasing a statement about Farrah Fawcett? Or the post about Obama not releasing a statement on Ed McMahon? Or any other well known figure who dies? That's the hacks for you at Politico.

Dan Froomkin Goes Out In A Bang Of Glory In Last Washington Post Piece

So what if some think that this headline maybe a little sensational, he went out in style Today's column is my last for The Washington Post. And the first thing I want to say is thank you. Thank you to all you readers, e-mailers, commenters, questioners, Facebook friends and Twitterers for spending your time with me and engaging with me over the years. And thank you for the recent outpouring of support. It was extraordinarily uplifting, and I'm deeply grateful. If I ever had any doubt, your words have further inspired me to continue doing accountability journalism. My plan is to take a few weeks off before embarking upon my next endeavor -- but when I do, I hope you'll join me. It's hard to summarize the past five and a half years. But I'll try. It is a great read, including this paragraph When I look back on the Bush years, I think of the lies. There were so many. Lies about the war and lies to cover up the lies about the war. Lies about torture and surveillance. L...

Yup, Dana Perino Is Still An Idiot

Image
Dummy Commenting on Gov. Mark Sanford’s (R-SC) extramarital affair with a woman from Argentina, former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino writes in the National Review: “If the constant stream of these confessions by unfaithful husbands is any guide, we’ll be treated to more and more of these stories.” She then suggests an interesting solution: While I am not able to explain, I do think I know the answer to all of this: Elect more women. No woman I know has the time for such trysts, nor do I know any who say the desire one. They’re too busy trying to keep all the plates spinning at home, at work, and at the gym to make sure none fall and break As Atrios puts it perfectly : Women Never Cheat Good to know, Dana, good to know... Very good to know indeed, especially since it came from her.

6/26/09- TWD's Agenda For The Day: They Were Singing And Dancing Yesterday

They were singing and dancing not only in Los Angeles yesterday, because the world is bigger than just Los Angeles. They were singing and dancing in New York. They were singing and dancing in Detroit. They were dancing and singing in London. They were dancing and singing in Tokyo. They were singing and dancing most likely in Gary, indiana. People were dancing and singing everywhere. They were quiet, melancholy, in shock the whole day. But singing and dancing is what they began to do when someone started playing the music of the person that they soon began to sing and dance about. Because they saw him sing and dance, and were inspired by it. Yes, some in the back of their minds thought about the embarrassing moments in his life, the humiliating ones. Ones that he may have regretted, ones that have lead friends to leave him or betray him, even though they were never friends to begin with in the first. And there are many in the back of their minds saying the same, and justified at times, ...

Post Before The Agenda: Universal Pulls LaToya Jackson Scene From Bruno Premiere

Good move by Universal. A needed move In the wake of Michael Jackson’s sudden death, a scene featuring LaToya Jackson in Sacha Baron’s Cohen’s new comedy “Bruno,” has been cut from the film prior to Thursday night’s Los Angeles premiere, Access Hollywood has learned. LaToya, Michael Jackson’s older sister, made an accidental cameo in “Bruno,” similar to one by Paula Abdul, where she was coaxed over to a home in Los Angeles for an interview with the fake Austrian fashion journalist. A source at Universal, the studio behind the film, told Access Hollywood that the scene in the movie with LaToya, which involves a Michael reference, was cut from tonight’s premiere out of respect for the family. The scene may also end up deleted when the movie heads out on general release in the United States beginning July 10, the source added . And they should do that as well.

Mr. "Lost And Found" Won't Resign

Image
Yup, you read the title correctly Although some in South Carolina -- and nationally -- are calling for Gov. Mark Sanford to resign his office in the wake of his six-day hiatus from the state and his acknowledgment of an extramarital affair on Wednesday, a close adviser to the Republican governor told the Fix that Sanford is not considering such an option. "Mark is firmly focused on reconciling his marriage, and on fulfilling his duties to the people of South Carolina for the remaining eighteen months of his term," said a senior adviser to Sanford who was granted anonymity to speak freely. "Jenny is a full partner in both of those desires." The source added that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a major voice in the state GOP, has publicly voiced his support for Sanford to stay on as governor and plans to actively advocate for that position over the coming days. Yup, not an option. But I guess one option is to use tax payers dollars again to go to Brazil! And take Senat...

Sports Thread #1 for 6/25/09: Shaq & Kobe=Title, Shaq & DWade= Title, Shaq & LeBron= ?

Image
Yes, the "Big Whatever You Want to Call" Him is all around his twitter today talking about his trade to LeBron @ the Cavs. He actually said that he didn't know the trade went down until he saw his Twitter. Funny, but I still don't believe him there. I still believe the Cavs need one more player though, even with Shaq good year last year for the Suns. They need another athletic young big guy to go along with maybe one more confident shooter at the 2 spot. Either way, if Mo Williams becomes a number three option instead of a number two to LeBron, well, the Cavs will be in great shape next year. And maybe "The Big Cavalier" will be that number two option, along with shuttering down Dwight Howard. Either way, it's probably title or bust for coach Mike Brown. Scratch that last sentence. It's title or bust for Brown.

Boy, Do They Have Some Nerve

And continuing from the post right below this one, Ahmadinejad gets brazen with Obama again: President Ahmadinejad on Thursday criticised US President Barack Obama for his condemnation earlier this week of the violence in Iran. "Our question is why he fell into this trap and said things that previously [former US President George W] Bush used to say," he was quoted by the semi-official Fars news agency as saying. And Kim Jong II throws his two cents in, threatening major nuclear warnings based off the U.S. and South korea striking a deal. You got to love these leaders and their bluster. And you love their bluster even more, because if it wasn't bluster, this world would be in much more calamity than it already is in.

Iran Update.....Not Good For the Protestors

The crackdown is going down in a major way in Iran. Mousavi is obviously worried . Speaking via his website, Mr Mousavi warned that such moves would lead Iran "towards a more violent atmosphere". Ahmadinejad is still rubbing it in the protestors face. Thankfully, most of the country's MP's didn't join him for his party . This is really tough to endure:

6/25/09- TWD's Agenda For the Day: ABC's News Latest Debacle

As I mentioned last night, ABC News embarrassed itself again, as Charlie Gibson (and Diane Sawyer) littered the television set with conservative view points instead of trying, to at least, AT LEAST, be balanced. I don't even thank Gibson mentioned one poll about how the nation overwhelming wants serious reform or a public option in the bill. In fact, Gibson did just the opposite: Thankfully, there was someone besides Obama there who had to tell Gibson the truth

Sports Thread #3 And TWD Condolences For 6/24/09: The Tragic Murder Of Ed Thomas

Brutal details and a real sad story that dampens a great day in sports. A former player of this legendary high school football coach shot him. Ed Thomas, who produced four NFL linemen as the football coach at tiny Aplington-Parkersburg High, was shot and killed Wednesday inside the school's weight room, authorities said. The gunman, identified by authorities as 24-year-old Mark Becker, is a former student who played football for Thomas. Thomas was shot multiple times just before 8 a.m. local time, authorities said. About 50 students were in the school, including several in the weight room, at the time. School was not in session, and no one else was injured in the attack.

Deep: Helen Thomas Asked The Deepest Question Yesterday Again.....And No Cared

Image
Thanks to truthseeker for this Glen Greenwald has the details (6-24-09): For the last question at his press conference yesterday, Obama was asked by CNN's Suzanne Malveaux about his reaction to that video and to reports that Iranians are refraining from protesting due to fear of such violence. As Obama was answering -- attesting to how "heartbreaking" he found the video; how "anybody who sees it knows that there's something fundamentally unjust" about the violence; and paying homage to "certain international norms of freedom of speech, freedom of expression" -- Helen Thomas, who hadn't been called on, interrupted to ask Obama to reconcile those statements about the Iranian images with his efforts at home to suppress America's own torture photos ("Then why won't you allow the photos --"). The President quickly cut her off with these remarks: THE PRESIDENT: Hold on a second, Helen. That's a different question. (Laughter.) ...

Nico Pitney Haters, I Have Two Words For You : Jeff Gannon

The bruhaha and anger directed to Nico Pitney and Obama after calling on the Huffington Post journalist in yesterday's press conference made one person remind me, and hopefully you out there, of this one name: Jeff Gannon In my post yesterday that was cross-posted at TPMCafe, NobleCommentDecider said that name and described to you who don't know that name or remember it, who he was Doesn't everyone miss Jeff Gannon, the gay stud patsy masquerading as a reporter that GW Bush and Rove planted in press conferences with a White House pass, to ask questions about why Democrats were unpatriotic? Outstanding point, isn't it? And here's footage of Mr. Gannon Bill Maher's great episode on Gannon Olbermann's report I wonder where was the outrage and questioning from CBS' Mark Knoller, Hakcio's Calderon , and now Washington Post's Dana Milbank and the AP ( Via Marcy ) The media sure does embarrass itself thanks to their amnesia problem.

Sports Thread #1 for 6/22/09: 2009 Wimbledon Update- Sharapova Crashes Out In The 2nd Round, Thanks To Dulko

Image
From Tennis.com. hilarious headlined Indeed so. The Argentine Gisela Dulko looked to have given the match away, blowing a 3-0 lead in the second set after winning the first 6-2 and losing seven straight games in the process. but she held strong, getting five match points and finally converting on the fifth as Sharapova sent a ball out long. Serena Williams has advanced in impressive fashion. And only four America men remain in the tournament, as Mardy Fish advanced to the third round today over the talented but erratic Serb Janko Tipsarevic. Speaking of talented serbs, Novak Djokovic continues to look unconvincing, but he got through in straight sets today. He'll take on Fish in the next round, and judging on form, I think Fish takes him out. More updates to come throughout the day.

Are Senators Baucus And Conrad Being Immature

Image
At first glance, this post from Greg Sargent would make you shake your head at Obama and Emmanuel ( it did mine ) Did Rahm Emanuel privately signal to Democratic Senators that the White House is prepared to drop the public insurance option from health care reform in order to get a bill passed? Two Dem Senators now say Emanuel is signaling exactly that : White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel met last night at the U.S. Capitol with Senate Democrats and told them Obama is “open to alternatives” to a new government insurance program in order to get legislation overhauling the health-care system to his desk, said Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota. And Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus of Montana said Emanuel urged the senators to seek Republican support and didn’t discourage them from pursuing the use of non-profit cooperatives, an idea Conrad has proposed. That last line is key: The White House may be signaling that getting a public option is less important than winning bip...

Officially, The Weirdest Story Of The Year

Image
South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has generated the weirdest story of the year, and one of the most bizarre stories of all time. We didn't know where he went. His wife didn't know where he went. His staff didn't even know where he went. And now, after hearing he went hiking, and being on the Appalachian Trail, and all of this in between, it now appears that there is another crazy twist in a story you just can't make up, via Red Sox at the Daily Kos (it pains me as a Yankee fan), Gov. Mark Sanford arrived in the Hartsville-Jackson International Airport Wednesday morning, having wrapped up a seven-day visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, he said. Sanford said he had not been hiking along the Appalachian Trail, as his staff said in a Tuesday statement to the media. Sanford's whereabouts had been unknown since Thursday, and the mystery surrounding his absence fueled speculation about where he had been and who's in charge in his absence. His emergence Wednesday en...
