10/8/09: TWD's Agenda For The Day: While We're At It, Let's Give States The Choice To Follow The Constitution Or Not
And let's just let them have the option of deciding to accept Brown vs the Board of Education, Roe v Wade as Ms. Hemsher said, and any other bill or important case that has become a federal edict, and make it a subjective state rights' decision.
Let's have them decide on SCHIP if they want their kids to not have health care or not. Let's have them decide on whether they want to finally drop Medicare and Medicaid like they want. Let's give them carte blanche to start real secret army groups by giving them the option to opt out of the 4th Amendment so Glenn Beck can have his own army to combat "Obama's secret Army."
We might as well since we think it's all cool and well now that an opt-out option for a public option is the right way to go. A private decision for a public option (despite the public making the decision to want it, especially in some "red states" too) by either or both lying or crazy governors who will screw the people over just to do it.
Can you imagine giving Appalachian Argentine trail hunting Stanford given the decision to not take the public option? Or what about Tippy Toe Jindal, the one who hates stimulus but happily takes stimulus? Or what about old "Tenther" Rick Perry and new "Tenther" Tim Pawlenty, who the former will still probably complain that the federal government is still being oppressive despite the fact that state's rights are being given full dominion here while the latter does whatever new silliness he is doing to not appear boring by the base.
As eugene said so well last night, how can you prove to people that good government works for society when you don't give government the damn chance to do so?
With all the momentum towards a strong public option growing by the day (despite the corporate media speculating about it being dead last week), leave it to some Democrats to make the insurance industry happy. And seeing Chuck Schumer now happy about this growing idea of another compromise just is a "Shake My Head" like no other.
Weak and dumb. Catering to the health insurance lobby to the bitter end to make "everyone happy." But who are these "everyone" people that will be happy? Because how it stands now, sucky coverage from careless and immoral health care companies like Wellpoint and Cigna will continue. That will make them happy, but not all the people slowly (or quickly, in Alan Grayson's words) die without it. And it will potentially even give some states an excuse to get rid of it for good, if they are beholden to the insurance companies of course.
But hey, it's okay, we'll stand for "States Rights" and be hardy hardy har har bipartisan at day's end, even if it remains that no Republican votes at days end in Senate is the obvious end result here with anything public option in the final bill.

It will wonderfully set a precedent for the debate of keeping or not keeping the 19th amendment, bantering on whether it's okay to fund parks or not, and whatever they hell rational idea you can thing of that conservatives would gladly want to give up.
