Sports Thread #1 for 7/27/09: Tennis Roundup

Robby Ginepri used Indy as a springboard to regaining success in 2005. Can he do it again in 2009?(Photo from GlobeSports)
Yeah, it's a weekly roundup of tennis, at its finest. And it will be a common thing around here.

Robby Ginepri revitalized his career in Indianapolis four years ago, and once again, he did it this pass weekend. Yesterday, Ginepri captured only his third title of his roller coster career by dispatching Sam Querrey in easy fashion, 6-2, 6-4.

For Ginepri, who is now 56th in the ATP world rankings after jumping 40 spots because of the great week, it was a welcome return to his best form, something that he arguably hasn't seen in over 3 years. He was 4-13 for the year coming into this match, and seem to be another American talent going by the waste side.

But just as analogous to 2005, when he was out of the top 100 and seemingly a journeyman forever before beating Taylor Dent in the final, the Atlanta native defeated another big serving Californian in style to get back on track.

Not once all week did Ginepri lose serve, which makes everything he did all the more impressive considering he'll never be known as an ace machine. His ground strokes were consistent and sound, a thing he must always do well in order to succeed. And it took its toll on Querrey, and it did all of Ginepri's opponents all week.

Nikolay Davydenko got back on track as well, winning the German Open in Hamburg by beating Paul-Henri Matthieu 6-4, 6-2. Boy, has that tournament diminished thanks to Madrid and the ATP.

And on the WTA side of things of bouncing back, Dinara Safina won in Slovenia , defeating Italian veteran Sara Errani in three sets to win the the Slovenia Open. It was her first match since getting royally embarrassed against Venus Williams at Wimbledon.

And speaking of Venus, her interview with Conan O'Brien was classic stuff.

Novak Djokovic and Ivo Karlovic are supposedly going to do a rap song. Funny.

In that same link, congrats to Tommy Haas and his beau.

For those who may care, Anna Kournikova got into a fight and handled her business a few weeks ago. Still, I think she has handled herself tremendously on her post tennis career, and I am glad to see her and Enrique going strong.

In those two respective links up there, I hope both Nicole Vaidisova and Sania Mirza just get it back completely.

Finally, John McEnroe voices his opinion on the lull in the schedule between Wimbledon and the US Open.

Your tennis roundup for this week.
