The Deft Volleys and S-Thread #1 For 9/5/12: The Final Straw Ever For Grand Slam Tennis Equal Play Argument
Now the discussion over equal pay at the Grand Slam Tennis has reach its highest boiling point after many high boiling points over the years. The ultimate climax maybe a foot, but let's address the key main issues right now.
1) Janko Tipsarevic is a world class right-wing loving idiot, who believes that all men should have the power, that gays are gays and weirods, and holds the beliefs of every conservative man around the world, American, Serbian or whatever. He clearly is an idiot and does not represent the rational perspective that Giles Simon and now Roger Federer feel on equal (outside of a few rational rare moments).
2) Simon and Federer are class acts that are, you know, human too. Sloane Stephens may or may not have caught Giles Simon on a bad day, but the fact of the matter is that Simon is respected around the locker room by everyone in the ATP and has never had a bad reputation among many WTA women or female media figures to most tennis journalists' knowledge.
3) At no point was the women's game bigger than the men's, even in the "golden age" of the 90's, from Seles-Graf, to Seles getting stabbed, to the emergence of Venus, Serena, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova to go along with Seles, Mary Pierce, Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario and Conchita Martinez.
4) That is different from the stars of the WTA game, who were equal to their male counterparts in terms of name recognition and popularity when the game is at its highest. Right now, especially in America with its diversity, Serena is just as big of a draw as Roger, Rafael, Novak, and both Andys (Murray and Federer).
With all of those points made, it comes down to this for me:
Both the men AND women need to play best of five sets at the Grand Slams.......but only from the quarterfinals to the finals. The first four rounds have to be best of three sets where it would be the best for everyone.
From singles participants to doubles participants, from the fans to the TV networks around the world, the game at its highest level will be strengthened with
Women can play best of five sets, and they should. Men can play best of three sets and know that they have to win if they are the best. That is what it should be, and it would add another great element to the WTA and women's tennis. It's truly the fairest way for everyone to have the analogous number of minimum and maximum sets.
Note: Tipsarevic thankfully in his second tweet made the correction point in all of this. Shamefully, he lost focus on the first and initial dumb, hypocritical tweet and became his usual trainwreck self when he doesn't think like the philosopher he is touted by many to be.
