Sports Thread #1 for 5/28/09: Another Blow To College Basketball

(Photo from Google)Is Derek Rose the player who cooked his SAT exam?
You seriously get tired of this happening again and again and again. A school violating (or accused of) NCAA rules and on the brink of being hammered in massive proportions.

That is the case with Memphis today, and it may involve Derek Rose fudging that famous three letter exam.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal first reported the story on Wednesday after obtaining a letter detailing the allegations through the Freedom of Information Act.

The allegations include "knowing fraudulence or misconduct" on an SAT exam by a player on the 2007-08 team.

The wording of the letter to Memphis indicates that the player in question competed only during the 2007-08 season and the 2008 NCAA tournament. The player's name was redacted in the letter due to privacy laws.
The power of a FOIA request strikes again.

Everything could be gone from that Final Two runner up season, and questions (if they aren't already)on John Calipari and what he's doing at Kentucky will rain down, though Calipari "has received a letter from the NCAA stating that he is not at risk of being charged with any NCAA violations in this case," the University of Kentucky said.

If you still haven't seen Chicago Cubs star pitcher Carlos Zambrano's tirade, here you go. It is an all time classic:

Zambrano has been suspended for six games by MLB, though for a starting pitcher, it really only means one game (unless they need his bat, thanks to him being one of the better hitting pitchers in baseball).

A shame to see Matt Cain and Akinori Iwamura out for long periods of time. Cain was just coming around to be a dominant pitcher for the Giants like Tim Lincecum before that injury, and Iwamura is gone for the entire season. Tough.

Mike Tyson and your family, TWD is praying for you. And I'll hopefully talk about this in full details later.

Venus Williams showed a lot of grit to win today, the kind of grit that "Shriester" Sharapova showed that Nadia Petrova still doesn't have yesterday (and that Maria herself, whether you like her or not, has).

Okay, she has that unless she is playing Venus or Serena that is.

ESPN sure has increased their softball and spelling bee coverage, haven't they?

If they react like this:

Imagine what their reaction will be if they come back from 3-1 down.
