People Struggling With College Loans, Meet One Jamie Gorelick

Some of you today may have read how Sallie Mae is planning to stop President Obama's Student Loans "Get the middle man" out ambitious plans.

Well, meet the one leading Sallie Mae's efforts in trying to accomplished that really shameful action.
Her name is Jamie Gorelick.

Now, there maybe some of you that know of this lady's history since being the Clinton Administration's Deputy Attorney General and appointee for Tom Daschle's Commissioner for of the 9/11 attacks. I am in the crowd of those who would have said "Who" if you mentioned her name to me this morning.

And for those still not privy to any information on Gorelick, this individual has a rap sheet that resembles a cross between Carly Fiorina and a Citibank executive. Her time at Fannie Mae sure was something that should make her eligible for white and black stripes, if you know what I mean.
Even though she had no previous training nor experience in finance, Gorelick was appointed Vice Chairman of Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) from 1997 to 2003. She served alongside former Clinton Administration official Franklin Raines. During that period, Fannie Mae developed a $10 billion accounting scandal.

On March 25, 2002, Business Week interviewed Gorelick about the health of Fannie Mae. Gorelick is quoted as saying, "We believe we are managed safely. We are very pleased that Moody's gave us an A-minus in the area of bank financial strength -- without a reference to the government in any way. Fannie Mae is among the handful of top-quality institutions." One year later, Government Regulators "accused Fannie Mae of improper accounting to the tune of $9 billion in unrecorded losses".

In an additional scandal concerning falsified financial transactions that helped the company meet earnings targets for 1998, a "manipulation" that triggered multimillion-dollar bonuses for top executives Gorelick received $779,625.
In fact, in a four year span, Gorelick received a wonderful $26,466,834., as the OFHEO (Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight) reported.

Get that everyone? She facilitated in bring deserved shame to Fannie Mae after receiving that position with no experience whatsoever in that field, and she gets rewarded with an eight figure SUPER SUPER rich salary that could pay for a lifetime of thousands in this country.

Yet despite that unbelievable reward for failing, Ms. Gorelick wants to continue being a monster to her country by making it harder for college kids and those trying to go back in college in general to afford it.

As an individual 7 months removed from college, the importance of writing and exposing this leading face of shameful, selfish, and evil lobbying becomes even larger. As the Times article indicates, Sallie Mae will fearmonger like hell about a "governmenet takeover" of student loans akin to the health insurance industry and the Republicans did last year in regards to health care. And there maybe a lot of people, especially students, who may not be privy to their despicable plans.

And it points once again to the real paramount problem of our government. Congress acts the way they act because of the special interests, we all know that (along with some of them being real A-holes). But you rarely if ever see specials on television or even reports from the rational online community dedicated to the specific lobbyists tainting our entire system of governance.

There hasn't been any investigative piece from a corporate media outlet on a Ms. Gorelick or Pharma boss Billy Tauzin, or anyone of the big shot health insurance lobbyists. What's the point of a Dylan Ratigan talking about "the special interests flooding out our politicians" if he or other decent to good media figures don't name specifically the firms or people ranking in the big checks in proud exchange for the deleterious effect it has on our country as a whole?

So while the finger pointing will deservedly go to the corporate Democrats joining their Republican colleagues once again denying their constituents and fellow citizens their request for proper honest representation in the nation's capital if the end result leads to no student loan reform, there are individuals like Ms. Gorelick who will continue to go relatively anonymous in the public eye to their platinum salaries and platinum lifestyles not receiving any notable culpability.

The Congressional figure may change, but the lobbying will stay the same unless these people are exposed for the corrupt figures that they are as well.

I didn't know who Jamie Gorelick was before today. I sure do now.

(And thank you Jane Hamsher for that).
