The Amazing Chronicles Of The Public Option: Show The White House It Has The Majority Votes For The PO
Photo from the AP's Charles DharapakIt has been a wild last 24 hours in the wild life and times of the government insurance option.
From Debbie Stabenow and Daniel Inouye adding their names to the Michael Bennet's Public Option push becoming 23 to Jay Rockefeller halting the momentum by somehow saying it would be too partisan to have a public option through reconciliation, the amazing twists and turns of the PO have risen to new unexpected levels.
And now today, after MoveOn.org has brought back Heather Graham and Steny Hoyer punted the PO responsibilities to the Senate again, Robert Gibbs has deemed that the PO just doesn't have enough votes to get the full majority support in reconciliation.
As Greg Sargent reported, Adam Green sent a furiously expedient response back after hearing what Gibbs said, saying the White House possessed a "loser mentality."
Green is right here, and so is Jon Walker and Ezra Klein earlier in the day. President Obama has to come out and just say he wants the public option or not. Stop letting Rockefeller be the boogeyman or anyone else and just say you don't want the public option now publicly.
Because it will be something if more Senators continue to sign onto the public option pledge and deservedly force the White House's hand on this. When the likes of Chuck Schumer, Diane Feinstein, and Tim Johnson sign onto this when they sure as hell could have not paid Bennett's push any serious attention, then the White House's attempt at not dealing with the public option forcefully is pretty pathetic.
If these Democratic Senators truly believe in the public option, then all they need to do is show full proof that they indeed have the majority votes to pass it through reconciliation.
And if it gets to that point, then the White House better know what to do then. But the argument could easily be made that they should be supporting the push right now.
