The Break For 2/26/10: Relief, Paterson To Not Seek Re-Election

Saves himself the embarrassment
Gov. David Paterson is poised to announce that he is pulling the plug on his campaign, a source close to the embattled governor tells DN Capitol Bureau Chief Ken Lovett.

Resignation is not in the cards at the moment.

A time and location for the expected announcement have not yet been set. Lovett and I were told to expect official word this afternoon, but there are now reports that it could come sooner - perhaps even before midday.

There is no word at all from Paterson's press office, to which multiple calls and e-mails have been directed.

More as the story develops...

UPDATE: Another highly-placed Democratic source who has known the governor for years confirmed he indeed appears to have come to the decision that he cannot stand for election this fall, but also cautioned: "It's (Paterson), so we'll see."
This saves Paterson from Andrew Cuomo embarrassing him. The writing was on the wall long enough.
