Sports Thread #1 For 9/7/09: 2009 US Open Day 8, Thread #1: The Russian Slayer Does It Again! Oudin Knocks Off Petrova

By -

What more can you say, other than you hope Svetlana Kuznetsova doesn't win her quarterfinal tonight for her sake. Because Melanie Oudin is no question, the Russian slayer.

For the third straight match, the 17 year old Cinderella story from Marietta, Georgia, lost the first set against a seeded Russian big name. And for the third straight match, Melanie Oudin has come form behind to win and advance in dramatic fashion to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Buffy can't slay vampires the way Oudin has slayed Russians tremendously in a four day span. The remarkable story continues, and let's just say this.

Don't count her out for not only the finals here at Flushing Meadows. But with the right bounce on the other side of the bracket with Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters the favorites to reach that ultimate stage, exclude Oudin from a shot at winning this title.

Because with those big match intangibles she has shown, you shouldn't count her out.

Federer to play Tommy Robredo, and this is Robredo's best chance ever to beat Federer. And yet, that probably won't come close to happening.
