The Sleep Time And Rise "n" Shine Thread For 8/10-11/10: Cheers To The Most Underrated And Under Appreciated
Photo from Associated PressWhen we look back on August 10, 20010 in our hopefully happy year round ups in December, most in the media will probably remember this day for all the usual wrong reasons.
You can already see the energy devoted to those "wrong reasons", and they have generated the top headlines and focus throughout the rational online community.
And that is a total shame.
Because for this day, the standout event wasn't another slap from directly the top to who the hell knows who, or how a once proud Congressman is creating a very sad and narcissistic ending to his career.
Rather, in a sane world, most of the attention in the US political bubble we reside in would be on the current Speaker of the House.
Unless it's the final numbers in an election, I have dwindled in my attention and importance for polls over the years. Maybe it is more the ones conducting the polls, such as Scott Raspublican , or the lazy analysis our vapid media draws from them that leads me to not give much credence to basically 7 out of 10 polls I see (just an approximation, not a definite ratio).
But whenever I see the national approval numbers for Nancy Pelosi, and how those numbers seem to always be stuck in the 30% favorable 50% unfavorable numbers (still at least 15 to 20 % behind President Obama), that is one that will always grab my attention as a crushing example of how our nation as a whole fails to pay attention.
Quiet simply, despite a bevy of political opportunist Blue Dogs and that other chamber of Congress, the -Senate- House of Lords, always doing their best to dampen the work enthusiasm in the House, Pelosi has arguably done more than any other Speaker in history during her tenure.
Yet for all the consistent diligence the House Democrats have shown under her leadership, most of the country still thinks of her as no better than Mr. Tang, who added to his highlight realm of insanity yet again today. "Spending, spending, spending", the wannabe golfer continues to vociferate at his buffoon levels anytime he gets a camera on him.
Maybe the only time I would ever reiterate anything John Boehner says comes here, for people should be at least "spending, spending, spending" more time wondering how Pelosi isn't the most celebrated Congressional figure around the nation right now.
She is basically on the side of the people on every issue right now, and has grown stronger in her role as a Speaker as time has progressed.
Has there been some slip ups in her time as Speaker during the Obama Presidency from her end? Yeah.
How she didn't force the non-negotiable rates for the public option in the original final version of the House health care reform bill to make that bill the most liberal it could before entering Lieberman, Baucus, Nelson, Lincoln and Snowe's hell hole building was tough to swallow. And she really is powerless (despite having all the power to prevent stuff from coming on the floor ) to stop war supplemental bills in Afghanistan (I hope no one seriously thought two weeks ago that she had a prayer to stop that bill from coming on the floor).
Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped this San Francisco representative for being possibly the most valuable figure in all of D.C. right now, especially in the eyes of those in the left base not seeing enough support for the best policies (or a creation of the right policies) from President Obama or Harry Reid.
And today, after calling back everyone in the finish the job of trimming the House of Lords did on the State aid bill, Pelosi certainly exhibited everything that any rational independent and frustrated casual follower of politics would deeply admired if our cable infotainment centers really cared to do some actual journalism instead of place her part of the "partisan divide of Washington."
She made everyone come back from their recess when they needed to in order to save those jobs of some teachers, firefighters, policemen, and others in this country (while also leading to a close of a tax loophole to out source those same jobs we badly need to preserve here in this country).
Now if that isn't the news that should generate the most headlines, the most blog posts, and even the most time sitting and tweeting about today from our capital, then we obviously are swimming in a sea of terrible news times.
So while all your TV and PC sources gives more time to Gibbs' screwup, Rangel's pathetic ending to his career, or even Linda McMahon putting the choke slam on Rob Simmons, they'll ignore the real story of the day.
And I'll continue to wonder how a woman who does so much for this country continues to get so little credit for it.
(To Tevin, take care folks.)
