Sports Thread For #2 For 3/30/10: Olic, Munich Stun United As Rooney Limps Off

In just the span of 15 seconds, both Manchester United's and Wayne Rooney's years might have flashed in the blink of an eye.

Ivica Olic, who blew a clear cut chance in the 1st half, scored the game winning goal to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 advantage over their England opponents after leg one of their quarterfinal tie.

And that goal came a few moments after Rooney was stepped on in midfield, leading to him hobbling off at match's end in obvious pain.

The injury didn't look all that good considering the fact that the England striker didn't put any weight on his ailing left foot while egressing the pitch.

There will be updates as to the extent of his injury, as United's season has hit the all crucial stretch now, with a potential Barclays Premier League title decider with Chelsea on Saturday before next week's return leg against Bayern.

It was a much different atmosphere at the start of the match for Rooney and his team, as he tallied home his 34th goal in all competitions this season to put United up within just two minutes. The contest was full of shaky defending throughout, as both teams could have added to the lone goal tally in the first half. And it seemed with chances not being taken throughout the contest, Rooney's goal would stand.

That was change however in the 77th minute, as Frank Ribery's deflected free kick ended up in the back of the net, leveling the match at 1-all.

Both teams than decide to press forward for the crucial third goal.

United were very unlucky to not be the ones to secure it, as Nemanjia Vidic's terrific header off a corner rattled the crossbar. That lack of fortuitous grace was not forgotten. Because on a night that seemed so promising in the beginning, United's evening turned completely 180 degrees the other direction when Rooney was stepped on in midfield.

That very same sequence further added insult to injury, as it exemplified how lackadaisical United's defense was. Patrick Evra was ridiculously casual with the ball, allowing the diligent Olic to dispossess him and smooth his delivery pass Edwin van der Saar, giving the German giants the slight edge into next week's return leg.

But all the thoughts fall squarely on the status of the world's best player not named Lionel Messi right now. Especially when it appears he will now miss the heavyweight encounter with Chelsea on Saturday.

Also: Lyon are in pole position to advance to the semifinals in the all "Ligue 1" class with league rivals Bordeaux, as Lisandro Lopez tallied home two in their 3-1 victory at home. That return leg along with the United-Bayern contest will be next Wednesday.
