Angel Di Maria's 81st minute goal gave Real Madrid a hard earner 1-0 win over Auxurre.

Arsenal bounced back from their bad weekend loss to West Brom with a 3-1 win over Partizan.

It was also a sound victory for the other London club in action, as Chelsea defeated Marseille 2-0 behind goals from John Terry and Nicolas Anelka.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in his return to the stopping grounds that developed him into a star, as AC Milan drew 1-1 with Ajax. Mounir El Hamdaoui scored the Dutch giants goal in the 23 minute before the Swede replied 14 minutes later.

Philippe Mexes and Marco Borriello gave Roma added momentum from their weekend win over Inter Milan by beating CFR 1907 Cluj 2-1.

In a time where Bayern Munich needed a life line, they got it from the ever growing dependable Bastian Schweingster, as his two goals helped lead the struggling German giants to a 2-1 comeback win over Basel on the road.

After their impressive playoff victory against Sevilla, it has gone all down hill for Braga ever since in this competition. Thrashed by Arsenal a fortnight ago, the Portuguese side was soundly beaten at home 3-0 by Shakhtar Donetsk. Two goals from Luiz Adriano made it 2 for 2 for the Ukrainian side so far.

And in the night's first match, Spartak Moscow dominated Zilina 3-0.
