No Larry Farina, the Penalty is For Your Obsessive Stupidity- 9/7/08 Sports Thread #1 (Review of some CFB and MLB)
As stated, sports reports will also be on this blog. And as promise, here is one of two today.

First, a quick review of the important events that went down yesterday in college football, because there are just too many games to cover. It just wouldn't make sense at all to do so.
In the upset of the day, East Carolina showed how for real they are with a sterling 24-3 whipping of #8 West Virginia yesterday in Greenville. And the game wasn't even that close.
Patrick Pinkey looked more of the Heisman Trophy candidate than Pat White did yesterday, but the defense of the Pirates was arguably the key reason to the dominance showed by Skip Holtz's side. Though East Carolina has proven itself to clearly be one of the best teams so far in the early season, the Big East and the ACC's terrible starts to their teams' seasons has also been a storyline so far. And East Carolina is the prominent reason why, with defeating a dysfunctional Virginia Tech team last week, and shutting down that explosive West Virginia duo of White and now Noel Devine.
Meanwhile, on the west side of the country, one of the most asinine calls from a refree of all time transpired in #15 BYU's win over Washington 28-27. As everyone has probably seen already on sportscenter, the consensus is that head refree Larry Farina is a certified fool.
As Lou Holtz said it correctly yesterday (best paraphasizing):
For those who don't know, Washington Sophomore QB Jake Locker scored the touchdown in the dying seconds to put the Huskies an extra point away from tying BYU and sending the game into overtime. In total euphoria, Locker threw the ball up in the air in celebration, self-celebration for an obvious great moment.
What transpired next was pure "dumbassness." Farina's call of unsportsmanlike conduct to Locker for obsessive celebration had everyone, including BYU fans, shaking their heads in disgust. Basically, he "stuck by the rules" by penalitizing Locker and the Huskies 15 yards when Locker threw the ball in the air after crossing the goal line. That meant an extra point attempt that became a mini field goal from 16 yards out. The extra point was blocked, and BYU continued its nation long winning streak at 12.
"I didn't even realize I'd done it," Locker said. "I scored a touchdown jumped up and the ball just flew in the air. Honestly, it was just a reaction. It wasn't premeditated. But, in hindsight, it was something I shouldn't have done. I've never done it in the past."
Locker really needed not to apologize, but he is the leader of the team and a class guy. Instead, that should be Farina for placing himself in the history books in the "Sports Bonehead Hall of Fame."

To MLB now, and two games of note. The White Sox scored the 7-6 victory of the Angels in a 15th inning battle of attrition yesterday, as Jim Thome hit the game winning home run. That "round tripper" from Thome was the 537th of his career, passing Mickey Mantle for 14th place on the HR list. The Chi South Side team are now two and a half games ahead of the Twins in the AL Central.
And Manny being Manny continues for the Dodgers, as they denied Brandon Webb his 20th win of the season and placed theselves ahead of the Diamonbacks in the NL West with a 7-2 win. The win gave the Diamondbacks the half game defecit for a change, as Ramirez hit a three-run homer and a two-run double after striking out with the bases loaded aganist Webb in the third inning.
